PERHAPS THEY MOSTLY GAVE UP ON GENIE LIKE I ALMOST DID? AFTER ALL, FLAGSHIP COMMODORE HAS ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING ABOUT THE +/4 EXCEPT DISCUSSIONS LIKE THIS ONE WHICH TEND TO BE MOSTLY NEGATIVE. Here's one litle tidbit I've picked up about the +/4: It seems that the +/4 was designed as to be capable of operating in a virtual memory mode. As to whether the engineers actually desinged a VM operating system for it, I don't know. Now. Tell me that it's a joke! If they were serious enough to set aside some meory for VM then the +/4 can hardly be considered a joke! It seems that people are quick to fault the machine when it has no fault except the misfortune of getting dumped when Commodore was about to go under. It's a good machine and it has potential. Even after being orphaned. ------------ Category 13, Topic 4 Message 2 Sat Nov 15, 1986 J.GILHOUSEN (Forwarded) Enter another Plus/4 userr into the world of GEnie... I love the machine, but spent over a year in frustration trying to translate C64 software full of peeks and pokes to run on the critter! Only recently has COMPUTE! Gazette and others started publishing meaningful Plus/4 stuff, and the Programmer's Reference Guide didn't come out until after CBM stopped manufacturing -- and they wonder why it didn't sell? Anyway, I now also have a C64 and use both machines for personal, business and volunteer work. I have translated a lot of C64 programs for my +/4 so that they can be used interchangably. Some of them are copyrighted, but I plan to sift through and find the P.D. ones, and will upload them gladly. Some Problems -- I have the Scott Foresman Programmer's Reference Guide, and find that the "Complete Memory Maps" are, in fact, reprints of Jim Butter- field's Memory Outline from Transactor, the SID map from the Owner's manual, and a more detailed Map that appears to be little more than the one that CBM published in their magazine when the machine first came out (less the labels). My biggest problem is that I have yet to find documentation of the BASIC ROM routines, and have not yet had the courage to wade into disassembling the whole thing... besides, I may not even have the expertise (a fairly sure bet, actually). AT ANY RATE... I would love to communicate with other orphaned Plus/4 owners... and I would especially like to see a section of the Software Library here set aside for those of us who have the magnanimity to upload our tediously translated Plus/4 programs. By the way, this is my first msg on GEnie... and I got a bit carried away! I already have that memory map and much more which I have learned on my own. If what you say is true, then I amay have more than the book as far as info on the +4/. You may have noticed that no XMODEM terminal program is available. That has changed mow. There is now a program called P/4TERM which uses XMODEM protocol for the +4. I haven't got all the details yet, as I 've just heard about it. As soon as I know more, I will pass it along. Also, watch this space for hacks for HiggyTerm to allow full 8-bit data capture... I'm working on translating C64 programs for the Plus/4, and uploading all my P.D. library to the Port of Call so if there is something you especially want to see, let me know and I'll move it up on my priority list. ------------ Category 13, Topic 4 Message 15 Fri Jan 23, 1987 DEBS-GUEST at 02:19 EST I'm Calvin Demmon (using Deb's account by permission), and I'm the president of PLUG, the Plus/4 Users' Group (Box 1001, Monterey, CA 93942). I'm very interested in seeing Plus/4 on-line activity grow and prosper, and I plan to upload programs from the club library here. If there's anything that irks me, it's the ignorant comments of C-64 owners who have never had their hands on a Plus/4 but who nevertheless express the opinion that it's an inferior machine. I cut my computing teeth on a Plus/4, and when I finally got to use a C-64 I was appalled. I was used to typing DIRECTORY and getting a directory list that didn't destroy the program in memory. I was used to DSAVE and DLOAD and HEADER. I found that to accomplish anything on the C-64 you had to use Sanskrit-like commands. I also found that the C-64 has less available memory (although one "knowledgeable" C-64 owner once told me seriously that the Plus/4's memory was smaller because the built- in software used most of it up!). I have a C-64 now and I never use it if I can avoid it. Anyway, forgive me for getting up on my soap box. One other thing irks me: Commodore's incredibly bad attitude when it comes to supporting those of us who paid them our hard-earned bucks for the Plus/4 and have received nothing but the cold shoulder ever since. That's why we started PLUG, and although it's hardly a perfect organization (the newsletter doesn't always come out on time, library orders are sometimes delayed, etc.), it does bring about 500 Plus/4 users together now, and I personally have learned a tremendous amount from the other members. We have to support ourselves with the Plus/4 -- Commodore isn't going to do it. OK. This is too long. Sorry. I just want to put a couple of addresses here. With its UART chip, the PLUS/4 is capable of speeds in excess of any other CBM machine (if we don't count the AMI) and that is the end of the good news! Bad news: I know of nobody who has programmed the Plus/4 for BBS... and worse news: CBM in its wisdom didn't connect the carrier detect, so the only way for a Plus/4 BBS program to start up would be to continuously test for input and hangup after time limit was exceeded... cumbersome at best. I have been working hard on an ML program for XMODEM terminal for the Plus/4 and am accumulating more than I ever thought I wanted to know about RS-232 handling on the Plus/4. I will be happy to share this information with you or your BBS friend... just drop me E- mail. John-Mark ------------ Category 13, Topic 5 Message 4 Mon Jan 05, 1987 DEB [*SysOp*] (Forwarded) Good News, tho, J-M! If you use a Hayes type modem, you can test the RS-232 port for either a status message string: 'CONNECT' 'CONNECT 1200' or the result codes. The key word up there is Hayes type ... I'm talking Hayes compatibility, not quasi-AT style commands!! Some of the less expensive modems being sold nowadays don't support regular status messages like a Hayes does, nor do they return result codes . At any rate, I'd say that putting up a 1200/300 BBS would notbe too hard at ALL with a 1670!! Just look for the CONNECT or CONNECT 1200 to answer and to disconnect, pull down the DTR line. *snap!* and they are Off! *deb!* ------------ Category 13, Topic 5 Message 5 Mon Jan 05, 1987 J.GILHOUSEN [JOHN-MARK] (Forwarded) WOW, DEB!!! That is, indeed, great news! Especially since I was planning to buy a Hayes compatible for my C64 anyway (my 1660 is definitely getting to be a bore!). Is there any reason why you would recommend a 1670 over a third- party Hayes compatible... the latter definitely apapears to give "more bang for the buck" and was the direction I was leaning. J-M ------------ Category 13, Topic 5 Message 6 Mon Jan 05, 1987 DEB [*SysOp*] (Forwarded) In the case of a Plus/+4, there may be a distinct advantage to using a Hayes compatible modem with an RS-232 interface! Because you can switch a Hayes compatible modem with dip switches to support: *> Continuous DTR *> DTR true *> Continous DCD *> DCD true ALSO...there are a couple of RS-232 interfaces which allow you to switch whether the DCD and DTR lines go high or low! I'm not so sure that the Plus/4 *cannot* detect carrier, I think its more that it *does* detect carrier, only does it in a backwards manner from other CBM computers...! How's that correspond with what you know? *deb!* ------------ Category 13, Topic 5 Message 7 Mon Jan 05, 1987 J.GILHOUSEN [JOHN-MARK] (Forwarded) There is no reference to carrier detect in the Plus/4 Programmers Reference Guide (which doesn't surprise me, as usually when I consult this book with a question I leave without an answer). I based my assumption that carrier de- tect was not enabled on the Plus/4 by the fact that the 1660 carrier detect line has to be cut in order to become Plus/4 compatible. CBM has not answered any of my letters with RS232 questions on the Plus/4, but I am expecting a call from David Johnson, senior programmer at Tri-Micro, tomorrow, and will ask HIM! Thanks for the info on the Hayes compatibles... I think that is the route I am going to go... and I am planning to buy the new Aprotek RS232 interface, if they con- firm that it will fit into the Plus/4's port, which as I am sure you know, physically slightly smaller than that on the C64 and C128. J-M ------------ Category 13, Topic 5 Message 8 Thu Jan 08, 1987 J.GILHOUSEN [JOHN-MARK] at 03:30 EST I am using Dennis Larson's P/TERM 4 for the first time, tonight. It is a fair- ly impressive little puppy, and I would recommend it on first impressions. It does have some quirks I dislike, but they are more in the category of items for consideration of the author in enhancing future versions, rather than fatal flaws... except ONE. It does not have a half-duplex setting, which means having to request full duplex from GEnieat logon... I don't know the full im- plications of this, since GEnie seems to be functioning well for me tonight in full duplex mode. If anyone is interested, I will write up a more extensive review of the program and post it in the Library area. J-M P.S. It is ENTIRELY machine language, so any complaints of speed would have to be that it sometimes works TOO FAST, a problem I can live with!!! ------------ Category 13, Topic 5 Message 9 Fri Jan 23, 1987 DEBS-GUEST at 02:28 EST This is Calvin Demmon, of PLUG, the Plus/4 Users' Group, using Deb's account by permission. I took one of my 1670's, reset the din pins in the back for the Plus 4, which it mentions in the back of the Modem User's Guide, and plugged it in the port on the +4. Using HiggyTerm for the +4, I set the parameters like this: 1. Duplex: Half 2. Line feed: no 3. Stop bits: 1 4. Parity: none 5. Baud rate: 1200 6. Word length: 8 7. Set time 8. Dial mode:Touch tone 9. Answer phone: no O. Ring delay: 2 A. Line Control: 1660 Yes, I left the line control at 1660. Going into terminal mode, and sending the normal AT commands, such as ATX1S0=0, which turns off the auto-answer and gives you true Hayes command repeat, I ATDT'ed my local number at 1200 baud. I see the section gets along quite well without me, though, thanks to you, Michael, and now David (D-C-A). As soon as the last person in that list gets his XMODEM capability, the section should really flower. I am now concentrating my time on a new job, working with psychiatrically dis- abled persons. By the way, I found a source of great P.D. programs for the C64 to drive adaptive equipment for the handicapped, and was going to post the details to a thread I thought was up in Sec. 4, but I've lost it! I have uploaded most BASIC programs in two forms. The first, uploaded by XMODEM as a PRG file, can only be accessed by those of you who have Dennis Larson's PTERM program, the only XMODEM capable term program for the Plus/4. Several of us are working on getting an XMODEM P.D. terminal program operational... keep your fingers crossed and look for it here FIRST! In the meantime, I am also uploading a second version of BASIC programs with a suffix of ".LST" in the filenames. These can be accessed by buffer capture in spite of the fact that I am using XMODEM to upload them (due to problems I encountered with dropped characters when using straight ASCII uploads). To "download" these files, just do the following: 1. From the Library Menu select Download and specify the File Number or Name. 2. After the description, specify "L" for LIST. 3. Open your capture buffer (on Higgyterm, press -B) and press . You will see the listing on your screen, and your buffer counter will decrement. 4. GEnie will prompt you that the download is complete. Close your Buffer. (On Higgy, another -B). I would strongly recommend saving to disk immediately! On Higgyterm, just hit the Run/Stop key to get to the main menu and follow the prompts for a buffer disk save. Clear your buffer and you're ready to do it again. What you will have is a SEQ file... not loadable or runnable. There is a file in the library called SEQCON +/4 which will make the conversion to a PRG file, and the instructions are all in REM statements, but a few comments here are appropriate. First, since GEnie defines "text" as seven-bit characters, special print commands, like cursor keys, etc., do not translate so I have had to change these references to CHR$(x) equivalents. In some cases (notably in the DISK LABEL program) the only way to fit all that onto the line is by using abbreviations. Some non- abbreviated lines slipped by me, and will cause SEQCON to abort with a "LINE TOO LONG ERROR" message. If this happens, simply cursor up to the line, erase the word "PRINT" and substitute "?" etc. until the line is short enough to be accepted. Hit return to enter it. Then type "POKE 151,1:GOTO6" and press . The program should continue from where you left off. Also, when SEQCON reaches the end of the file, it will usually abort by trying to enter the "READY" prompt at the end of the listing. This yields the familiar "OUT OF DATA ERROR" message. You should type "CLOSE 2 " then "DELETE -9 , and what you have in memory is the program. Save it normally, and you are done. However, if the uploader over-zealously deleted the READY prompt in his/her listing, SEQCON will read past the end of the file and you will start to see an endless progression of vertical lines. PRESS THE "STOP" KEY IMMEDIATELY, cursor up to the last line, use an -Q to delete the vertical lines and press to enter the last line of the program. Then delete and save as above. It all may seem complicated, but I'm sure you'll find it easy after the first or second program you download. I have tested all the programs both before and after uploading them, so if your program won't fly after downloading, it was probably corrupted by a dropped character or garbled character. If it quits with a "SYNTAX ERROR" note the line number and drop me an E-Mail letter with that info, and I'll reply with the undefiled version of that line, so you can type in a correction. I'm not a SysOp, but I am very interested in the Plus/4 and I answer my mail... so if you have any questions or problems, post them here or drop me E-mail, and I will be happy to help. This message is so long, I'll quit here and start a new message to quickly discuss uploading for those of you with generous spirits. JOHN-MARK ------------ Category 13, Topic 7 Message 2 Tue Dec 30, 1986 J.GILHOUSEN [JOHN-MARK] at 19:30 EST The message I want to get across is PLEASE UPLOAD! If you have a P.D. program that you don't see here, or if you've written one, please share it. If you have XMODEM it's easy enough... just follow the prompts on your TERM program and the Library section's screens. If you're still using HiggyTerm, don't be scared away by the potential problems of PET/ASCII translation and GEnie's expectation of XMODEM transfers. The ways around these problems are fairly simple, though a bit tedious. The first step is to remove the cursor keys, etc., from the program that GEnie will not recognize. If I see a cursor-down, I usually delete it and substitute an extra PRINT stataement instead. For all other special keys (RVS, FLASH, etc.) I delete them and add the CHR$(xx) equivalent from the table you will find on P. 196 of the PLUS/4 USERS MANUAL. After making these changes, save your altered version, and then RUN it to make sure your alterations are all correct (one digit difference in a CHR$(xx) can really change things! If it checks out, the rest is a piece of cake... just print your file to disk. How, you may ask? Easy: 1. Type: OPEN 2,8,2,"filename,s,w":CMD2 2. Type: LIST 3. Type: PRINT#2, CLOSE2 You now have a sequential file containing the program listing. Only one problem, it's in PETSCII not ASCII. If you have a PET/ASCII conversion utility, use it. If not, don't worry, all that will happen is it will appear on GEnie in all caps or with caps and lowers reversed. Tiggy and I will breathe a deep sigh, and fix it! Next, all you have to do is load HiggyTerm, logon to GEnie and move to the library. When you follow all the prompts for upload, after typing in the description and keywords, you should specify 7-bit text. When you see the words "READY FOR INPUT" hit your stop key, and select "send disk file" from Higgy's main menu. When the transfer is complete, hit control-X, and that signals GEnie that you're done. I will be monitoring all uploads to the Plus/4 Port of Call, so if your upload needs fixing, I will do it. It may mean writing you E-mail to find out what a garbled line should really look like, but I think that is managable. Please feel free to E-mail me any Plus/4 questions. I am not a SysOp, but I have had my Plus/4 for years, love it, and have a real feel for the machine. If you have a problem, I've probably gone through it since I was computer-ignorant when I got my Plus/4 and learned what I know the hard way. Please consider uploading... if we all do, this section can be a real resource to all of us. It is the way we can make up for the fact that CBM never gave support for this machine. WHOOPS! To access Higgy's main menu, you need to press SHIFT and the RUN/STOP key together... it's been a while since I used it! JOHN-MARK ------------ Category 13, Topic 7 Message 3 Tue Dec 30, 1986 DEB [*SysOp*] at 20:06 EST Actually...waaay back when, before we had protocol uploading/downloading on the 64, this is the way we used to transfer things, too! Mike was kind enough to release this terminal program into the public domain through GEnie's *FlagShip* Commodore Roundtable, and did so in a form which would make it easy for others to append these files to other programs. As is, this is a very basic system, but with unlimited possibilities for inclusion in HiggyTerm for instance. You can find the 5 part program in Library #28, but you must have Xmodem to download it. The files are # 3596-3601. If you do not have the means to download this program, I will put it on a disk for you if you send me one...etc. See my address in the OLD CLUB BULLETINS, on Page 625, or drop a line via Email to TIGLON.G When you use another machine to download the files, you may have to strip the padding from the 4 ML files. You will find an auto-pad stripper for the 64 in the Library. Thanks to Michael Mantino for getting the program from Mike Zuckerman!
