********** Topic 13 Wed Feb 05, 1986 A.COHEN (Forwarded) Sub: Seq files on Superbase 128 I have a problem using the 1571 to save a seq. file to output to a word processor. When the disk has 642 blocks free the file being saved becomes garbled or isn't saved at all. ********** ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 1 Wed Feb 05, 1986 DEB [*Sysop* DEB] (Forwarded) Is your 1571 in single or double sided mode??? How large is the file you want to save? URK, this really sounds like a *bad* bug!!! ** ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 2 Thu Feb 06, 1986 PRESS24 [Softronics] (Forwarded) SB 128 outputs some very peculiar files loaded wih CHR$(0)'s to boot! The 1571 also has some interesting quirks of its own - it appears to update the disk's backside BAM after EVERY write to a sector (so as to not confuse itself with normal BAM in its memory). This may be where the bug comes from as SB appears to use burst mode for everything, and possibly the drive is not accepting it. -==- ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 3 Thu Feb 06, 1986 DEB [*Sysop* DEB] (Forwarded) I'll check with Tranmer about this....but that sounds like it could sure be the trouble, Steve. I've decided not to even MESS with the second side of a 1571 disk, because of all the troubles....Even without burst speeds, writing to the second side of that disk has troubles of its own, like even a SEQ file save is the SLOWEST thing I've ever seen in my life!!!! *deb!* ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 4 Fri Feb 07, 1986 A.COHEN (Forwarded) >Deb, In answer to your question, the blocks I'm trying to save are 8 blocks. I need both sides of the disk because I need to keep one month's business on the same disk for correlation purposes. This is why I got rid of my 1541 and got a 1571. I am using double sided disks. ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 5 Fri Feb 07, 1986 PRESS24 [Softronics] (Forwarded) Another problem the 1571 may be having with Superbase: Supposedly in "fast" mode (2 megahertz) the computer will not properly talk to the serial buss. I seriously doubt that the folks at SB could have forgotten to "turn down" the computer speed, for I don't have this problem, but tis possible I have a later release. -==- ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 6 Sun Apr 27, 1986 NNORMAL (Forwarded) I just bought Superbase 64 and love it... Where oh where can I get Superbase 128...? This is sort of a bug... my bug ... but I just thought Id share it ehehe ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 7 Mon Apr 28, 1986 DEB [*deb!*] (Forwarded) SuperBase 128/Super Script US Distributors are: Progressive Peripherals 464 Kalamath St. Denver, CO 80204 (303) 825-4144 These programs are also finding their way into dealers and mass markets already, but if you cannot find them locally, I'm pretty sure that Progressive can fill an individual order. I've not had time to dig extensively into SuperBase yet, but I'm very impressed with what I have worked with of it! I use Super SCript ALL the time, lets me do some of the MASSIVE editing jobs I have to do to keep up with everyone here on the board...! <> *deb!* --------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 14 Tue Apr 29, 1986 NNORMAL [TALKTALK] (Forwarded) Thanks for the Superbase 128 distributor's address. I cant wait to get a copy for myself. I'm going start a a new topic now for my next question. Its about the loads and loads of software and which is best! ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 15 Tue Jul 01, 1986 B.GRAY [Brent] (Forwarded) Where should I start??? As some (all?) of you may know, the 1571 has some very serious bugs in at least one of the ROMs. This is what is causing all the problems in Superbase. (It is also apparent in other Databases which are very disk intensive; i.e. Consultant, Timeworks Data Manager 128, etc.) It is only a problem once you begin using the SECOND side of the disk, and is especially devastating when sorting a large file... in fact it just DOES NOT work!!! Most phone calls to Commodore get a polite denial that the problem exists, but it does and some Commodore engineers will acknowledge that they are working on a new ROM. Actually the first 'draft' is already done and BETA testing is underway. Progressive Peripherals have the ROM and say it works great with SB. No more problems!! Unfortunately these new ROMs won't be "officially" available until who knows when?????????? (If ever???) As a Commodore dealer and dedicated Superbase programmer, I am VERY interested in the progress of this "situation." I'll keep you informed... Brent Gray ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 16 Wed Jul 02, 1986 GBARRETT [VISION100] (Forwarded) Brent...check the Library for the 1571 Write fix...it's one you can change thru programming... Beyond that, you may be waiting for a Loooooong time for Commodore to come up with the proper upgrade...and even longer before you can have it in YOUR drive! -Gary ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 17 Thu Jul 10, 1986 B.GRAY [Brent] (Forwarded) GBARRETT... Thanks for the information on the 1571 problem! I especially appreciate the tip on the 1571 Write Fix in the library. Unfortunately, I can't find it. I've searched under '1571'... 'write'... & 'fix'... There is one called second side secret... but it deals more with the slow second side reads and writes, NOT the problems caused by the bad chip. Do you have any more information??? Thanks... Brent ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 18 Fri Jul 11, 1986 GWAYNE [Gwf] (Forwarded) You may be right. I don't think it is here. I will find. It should be in lib 9. Gary ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 19 Sun Jul 13, 1986 DEB [*deb!*] (Forwarded) YES, there are bugs in the 1571 RO~MS, and they are being fixed, and CBM will be releasing new ROMS... The bug happens when you access side two, it gets confused, and instead of making room in its OWN RAM buffer the right way, get this,... IT STEALS the BAM's BUFFER **WHAMM** This is causing all sorts of errors under different conditions, which is why it was so difficult to track down. You all can get the story right from those working on it later this month during the JEFF PORTER Conference. *deb!* ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 20 Sun Jul 13, 1986 WDBAILEY [SIR WAYNE] (Forwarded) DEB, How are we going to be able to get these new Roms? Any word on cost? Sir Wayne.. ---------- Category 14, Topic 13 Message 21 Mon Jul 14, 1986 DEB [*deb!*] (Forwarded) You can read exactly what Jeff Porter, from CBM, said about it all, nothing is definate right now. The file is uploaded already into the Software Library, in the INFO Exchange. AND...this gives everyone here a head start on questions to ask him for follow up! *deb!*
