July 21, 1987 -- Electronic Arts has announced the release of a new strategic adventure game from Strategic Studies Group. RUSSIA: THE GREAT WAR IN THE EAST 1941-1945, recreates the climactic four years of bitter conflict which raged from the shores of the Black Sea to the frozen tundra of the Artic Circle. "In the grand tradition of strategy games from Strategic Studies Group, RUSSIA evokes all the powerful and thoughtful decision making anyone could ever ask for," said Ian Trout, president of Strategic Studies Group and designer of Russia. "RUSSIA will place you on varying levels of play from being an observer to assuming a role of supreme command. It will allow you to relive perhaps the greatest military struggle in the history of mankind in which over 20 million men fought the decisive conflict of the Second World War." In RUSSIA you are presented with a two-dimensional simulation of the historic battlefield, from Berlin to Stalingrad and from Leningrad to Sevastopol. OKH (Germany) and Stavka (Russia) are embroiled in combat. At an observer level, the great war will re-enact itself without player interaction, allowing players to study the battle the way it actually took place. At an interactive level two players, or one player against the computer, begin by choosing a side and deciding whether to command an entire country or one or more units within each - ARMY GROUPS in Germany or THEATRES in Russia. Players who do not wish to simulate the entire four years of battle from beginning to end may choose to take advantage of RUSSIA'S design kit. This built-in kit allows them to vary both economic and military parameters and begin the battle at any point within the four years. "The choices made by the actual commanders of these powerful armies are suddenly in the hands of the players," explained Trout. "Historical maneuvers and decisions can change with the touch of a button, and the final outcome can never be pre-determined." Additionally, short battle scenes, using only a portion of the game's battlefield, may be created. These short scenarios involve a single Army Group or Threatre and may be completed within one or two hours.
