sub: rs-232 interfaces, comparisons between interfaces. ************ category 8, topic 30 message 1 wed may 27, 1987 r.c.johnson at 22:38 cdt I am presently using Omnitronix's rs-232 interface. What I would like to know is what is the difference between this one & the one from Jameco, and the Vic 1011a (which is in a doodle rest file). When I printed out the schematic for the 1011 interface, I did notice that there is no 555 timer like the Omnitronix interface. Is the 1011 compatible with the c128? I also read in the Jameco catalog that their interface is only compatable with the c64. Why? ------------ category 8, topic 30 message 2 wed may 27, 1987 charrington [courtney] at 22:12 I am running a Jameco interface. Since I don't have the others, I won't be able able to compare. But here is what the Jameco doesn't have: pin 8 to pass carrier detect from the modem to the computer. Your terminal has to be able to read the modem response (ie: connect) to go to terminal mode instead of looking for carrier detect. The Jameco works just fine with the 128. ------------ category 8, topic 30 message 3 thu may 28, 1987 deb [*sysop*] at 02:34 edt The Omnitronix one has carrier detect. I have a real live vic 1011/a here & it works fine with my 128. Of course the the case is too big and I have to take it out of the plastic to use it. I use several rs-232 interfaces on my 128s: a gray one from CSI a Saylor interface from Saylor corp in Indiana and the old Vic 1011/a As I recall from the comments of users, the Omnitronix does not pass dtr and/or dcd thru to the computer like the Vic 1011/a does, but reverses them...which is *standard* for all other computers, just not ours. (til the 1660 & 1670modems came along, but thats another story...>> *deb!*
