If you haven't a copy of the program, download the main archive "novaterm8.1.sda" from the Communications transfer section as a preview. If you like what you see, you can grab the rest of the modules for it (in the file "nov8.1files.sda"). I'm aware that a few bugs have already been found by the Almighty GEnie Program Testers, so I'm planning to update soon. Good luck! -- Nick ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 2 Sun Aug 13, 1989 DO-RAE-MI [Ted] at 04:07 EDT Welcome Aboard, Nick! Ted ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 3 Sun Aug 13, 1989 C128-BILL [SYSOP] at 07:12 EDT Welcome, Nick!! Thank you for offering your support for NovaTerm. Murphy's Law always prevails! They say that there are 'bugs' even in your eye-lashes ;) ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 4 Mon Oct 02, 1989 M.WOODHALL at 19:58 CDT I'm having a problo em dialing out.I have a 122 00baud Migent modem. Can you tell me what the byte settings should be? ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 5 Thu Oct 05, 1989 DO-RAE-MI [Ted] at 21:51 EDT Uh, which setting do you have selected? I have a Hayes compatible modem which is much happier with the New 1670 modem selection than Hayes 1200. Perhaps this might fix your difficulty? Let us know! Ted ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 6 Fri Oct 06, 1989 M.WOODHALL at 21:42 CDT I assumed that I should use the Hayes setting, but I'm willing to try anything once.I'll let you know! ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 7 Sat Oct 07, 1989 M.WOODHALL at 07:15 CDT Well,I changed to the new 1670 and got it to dial out but the byte settings are still way off. I've tried to adjust them while on-line but can't make any progress. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 8 Sat Oct 07, 1989 DO-RAE-MI [Ted] at 14:27 EDT Hmmm. Well, take a look at the bottom 2 settings in the thing. They read top to bottom, 70, 1 as I recall. Try dropping the 70 figure down. Change it a few numbers then read a bulletinboard message to see if it helps. Most adjustable programs for me are happy with 59,1 setting, but everyone's machine, phone circumstances are a little different. And on this program, I've been able to use the default 70/1 setting. Stick to messing with the second from the bottom setting for starters. As you near the right setting, the garbage should decrease. Keep me posted! Ted ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 9 Sat Oct 14, 1989 N.ROSSI at 22:52 PDT Hi all! Just a note to let you know that I'm still around. I recently started college, and aside from the move to California, I've been incredibly busy with the adjustment. My thanks goes out to all those who have sent in shareware donations. Questions still welcome! -- Nick ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 10 Thu Nov 02, 1989 E.SHRIVER at 19:06 CST I down loaded NOVATERM8.2 dated 8/18/89. I can not run programs I down load with it. The number of blocks on my 1541 disk seems to be 1 greater than if I use XMOBUF which I used before. Do i need to use a pad stripper like before XMOBUF? NOVATERM is much faster and I love the options available. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 11 Sat Nov 04, 1989 N.ROSSI at 19:33 PST First, I assume you are using Xmodem? What programs specifically are you working on downloading? Perhaps the Xmodem protocol was corrupted during downloading. Try one of the other protocols to see if you have the same trouble. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 12 Tue Nov 14, 1989 B.HAINEAULT at 23:45 EST Greatings from Montreal... and here are a few questions from over here. a. Can NOVATERM 8.2 pulse dial a 1670 (new an old version) ? b. Is it normal that one cannot leave the BBS mode by pressing space or anything... only a re-boot works. c. Is it possible to create an 80 column caracter set (such as used with VIP XL (used now) or CBterm) ? d. What are the new enhancements planned ? In return, I am sending you some $$$ as I really like your terminal program. NOVATERM 8.2 has been made available on several local BBS' and all are impressed with it. (You are also getting great reviews on Q-Link and CompuServe :) By the way, I cannot reach your 335-0392 BBS... must be because of your move ??? Thst's it for now, and sorry for the E-Mail... I should have checked over here first :( ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 13 Fri Jan 05, 1990 N.ROSSI at 00:41 PST Again, I apologize for the lag between my calls. Seems I just missed my mail by a couple weeks and it got purged. I will definitely call back in a week or so, if you want to re-send your messages. But, to answer your questions... A) No, I didn't include an option for pulse dialing on Hayes modems. Rather ignorant of me! But, I've already added it to the new version I'm working on, which I will go over in a second... B) To abort BBS mode, you must press F1 at any prompt. It will return you to terminal mode if someone was using it remotely. C) 80 columns is not possible with the version you have, but again, it is a possibility for the next version. I'll just take a moment to preview a few things I've got going for Novaterm 9.0, which I'm hard at work on while I'm home for Christmas break. First, pulse dialing is supported. There's a new autodial screen, and the program now supports multiple phone book files with user-specified names (i.e. the phone numbers by themselves are saved to a file with a name that you specify, and you can change the name to load different numbers). You can do a full screen dump from terminal mode to the printer, disk, or a buffer file. I've cleaned up some of the color problems -- the text color of the menus is preserved even if the color has changed in terminal mode. I've made lots of other minor modifications, but the major things I'm putting into it are script file capability, RAM expander support, and possibly an 80 column terminal mode. I'm not too sure about the 80 columns yet, but it may be in there. Script files, in case you don't know, are short programs that you create and compile which instruct the terminal to perform automatically. For example, you could write a script program which would call up a board, log you in, read all the new messages and capture them in the buffer, and then log off. The program could also download and upload files, do ASCII dumps, and a number of other things. I have the script files working as of now, I haven't tested with a RAM expander yet, and I'm trying to work in the 80 columns, just to let you know where I'm at right now. It shouldn't be too much longer before this version is ready. I do want to thank those people who have shared their comments and suggestions about the terminal with me. Most of the modifications I've made are in response to user's suggestions, and they have spawned other ideas that I've been able to use. It really helps to improve the program. Thanks again! Nick ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 14 Tue Jan 09, 1990 N.ROSSI at 01:50 PST For those of you who have had problems with the Ymodem batch protocol, what exactly happens when you try to upload or download? What exactly is the problem you encounter? I just tried downloading two files from the directory here using Ymodem batch, and it worked just fine. The worst kind of bugs are when everyone else has the problem but you :) ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 15 Sat Jan 27, 1990 D.ROHNER at 00:40 EST I have tried to use the Ymodem option on Novare term on Genie and a BBS and what happens is it seems to download part of a file and then crashes leaving a reverse screen and no way to log off properly. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 16 Thu Mar 01, 1990 N.ROSSI at 22:15 PST I'm still looking into Ymodem batch to find any potential problems or things that cause problems on others' computers (but not mine :-) Sorry if I seem to be promising vaporware here. I don't have as much time to work on the program as I'd like to. But version 9.0 (still under construction) DOES have an 80 column mode. It's in there now. The only major things I'm working on now are getting VT52 and ANSI terminal emulators to work with the 80 columns. Once that's done, I should be able to releas it... ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 17 Sat Mar 17, 1990 N.ROSSI at 22:13 PST I've just uploaded the newest version of Novaterm (version 9.0) to the Telecommunications library. It will be available as soon as the sysops have If you're a registered user, you shou mail sometime near the end of next week. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 18 Tue Apr 24, 1990 C.WOODWORTH at 20:00 PDT Thanks for the excellent program!!! The $harebucks are on their way. I just purchased a ZOOM MX-2400. It didn't work well using 'XMOBUF', but it works great using the default HAYES-1200 settings (I can't afford GEnie at 2400 B. There's a +$2. surcharge where I live). Question: Theres nuttin in the docs about what the F-Key programmin' is for. Question: How do I add this HAYES dialling sequence before the modem autodials: ATTD,,,*70,, The Docs are rather inadequate... Do you send new docs after Registr.?? Thanks!! -pete ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 19 Sun Apr 29, 1990 N.ROSSI at 12:20 PDT I'm aware the docs are pretty sketchy... the reason is because any docs that fully describe the program would be too long to include with the program! The ones there now are long enough as it is... I don't have any longer docs written, but I have the memory map, which might be of some help. If you want to add the call waiting disabler before the number, just type it in before the number itself in each entry. I'm planning on adding a feature which will let you define dialing sequences into single characters (such as the ! character, similar to Telix), making it easier to tack on things like call waiting disable and long distance codes. I figured that F-key programming would be self-explanatory... define a string into a function key, and then hit that function key in terminal mode and the string will be sent. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 20 Sun Apr 29, 1990 N.ROSSI at 12:25 PDT I realized that I forgot to include some very important instructions in the docs regarding ANSI and VT52... so you may want to capture this short message and spread it around to anyone you know using the program. It's not immediately obvious how to set up the terminal to use ANSI or VT52. Here's a step-by-step method: -- Make sure 80 column mode is enabled. -- Load ASC.TERMS and FONT80.IBM, and then either TERM.ANSI or TERM.VT52. Those two modules must be loaded for ANSI and VT52 to work properly. The first one adjusts the ASCII translation, and the second one provides the IBM graphics characters. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 21 Sat May 12, 1990 C.WELLS11 at 11:05 EDT Hi I was loking for Novaterm 9.0 and couldn't find it. Can someone point me in the right direction thankx ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 22 Tue Jul 10, 1990 K.CARROLL1 [Will Carroll] at 02:42 CDT Nick, I have been trying to get Nova Term to set up right with my system for the last 3 or 4 months and I just can't seem to get it right. First of all I can't for the life of me get 2400 baud working with any sort of consistency. It will look fine and then I will get the worst strings of garbage. So bad that it usually gets me dumped. I have tried so many settings that I'm getting blurry eyed I just can't get 2400. Second is I too am getting dumped whenever I attempt Ymodem downloads. Same reverse screen with random characters and no keyboard control. Only way out is to shut down and reboot. Heres just a question I have also. Can I use the 40 col. ANSI from 8.2 with Ver 9.0? I would like to have both as I like the 80 col. but I also like to use the 40 col. for the color ANSI. If not maybe you could write a new 40 col. ANSI for 9.0. One last question. Are you having any luck with the Aprotek stuff? This is my modem by the way. Maybe that helps to answer my earlier questions. I also have Jiffy Dos installed if that matters. I have real good luck now with Ed Bell's "Bell Term" but I like the feel of your program and the ANSI capability and wish I could use both. Please let me know if you have any ideas on any of these problems. I would be happy to write you with detailed accounts if you will tell me what you need to know. Any way, so as not to sound all doom and gloom, the program does work quite well at 1200 with standard Xmodem protocol and once I am able to work out these other bugs I am sure I'll use it quite often. P.S. I hear you are checking into the "Transactor" Feb 89 article. Is this helping with the 2400 baud communications? ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 23 Wed Jul 18, 1990 N.ROSSI at 20:01 PDT All of the problems you mentioned have been pointed out to me already -- don't worry, I've been working on them. I have put the Transactor modem routines into version 9.1 of the program, and it has improved performace at 2400 baud immensely. In the previous versions, 2400 baud works for some better than others, I think simply because of the variations among C-64's. I've also done more work on Ymodem batch protocol. I have tested that protocol between my two computers so many times that if it doesn't work when it gets out to the public, I will know it was corrupted. Version 9.1 will be available in a week or so, I hope. I have a couple of people screening it for bugs that I missed. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 24 Wed Jul 18, 1990 N.ROSSI at 20:02 PDT Oh, almost forgot: I re-wrote the 40 column ANSI terminal, and it will be available with version 9.1. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 25 Tue Jul 31, 1990 K.CARROLL1 [Will C.] at 06:07 CDT Yea! Nick. If it finally will work like it looks like it should I swear I'll send ya the cash. I have spent many hours trying to get version 9.0 to work with my 64 and Aprotek modem and I really do like the layout of the program an awful lot. I just never was able to get reliable operation out of it. I'm also real glad to hear you got the color 40 col ANSI to work with the new version. That was the feature that drew me to Nova in the first place. One last thing. Can you either cover here or supply dox describing just how the "script files are set up". I have several examples of problems I've had if you would like me to list them? Any way glad to hear it's coming together. Joe over at Aprotek said you were sending it or had sent it to him somewhere around the 23rd. Does this mean it's finished? ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 26 Wed Aug 01, 1990 N.ROSSI at 19:53 PDT Actually the copy I sent him was a beta test version. I'm still getting some last stuff put in. Yes, I would like to hear about your troubles with script files. I do have a description of script files as part of the documentation I recently wrote. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 27 Fri Aug 03, 1990 K.CARROLL1 [Will C.] at 04:02 CDT Thanks Nick. I will sit down tomorrow and put a list together with the program in front of me. I'll get my questions up here in a few days at most. Thanks again and glad to here the work is progressing. If I can get this terminal set up and working for me as it should I think that will completely cover my 64 terminal needs, along with Bell Term. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 28 Sun Aug 19, 1990 N.ROSSI at 15:08 PDT Novaterm 9.1 has been uploaded to the telecommunications directory. It should be available in a day or two! ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 29 Wed Aug 29, 1990 N.ROSSI at 22:35 PDT I'm still here to answer questions about version 9.1 of Novaterm, if there are any. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 30 Sat Sep 08, 1990 C.WOODWORTH at 18:21 PDT I'm going to D/L v.9+ tonight. Thanks!!! -pete ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 31 Thu Sep 20, 1990 D.SAVAGE4 at 20:53 EDT I have NovaTerm 9.1, downloaded from Genie. I am using a C-64 and a odem 2400. I cannot get ANSI to work. I printed out the docs and loaded all three required modules. Any suggestions? ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 32 Fri Sep 21, 1990 ED.BELL at 02:08 EDT What are the 3 modules you loaded? I thought all you had to do was specify the ANSI character set from the menus in the program. I don't use NovaTerm, but I have loaded it and poked around a little. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 33 Fri Sep 21, 1990 D.SAVAGE4 at 21:50 EDT You must load 3 files for any configuration you wish to use. A Terminal Emulation file, a font, and an ASCII translate table. The three files I loaded are: TERM.ANSI/80 COL., FONT80.ANSI/VT52, and ASC.ANSI/VT52. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 34 Fri Sep 28, 1990 N.ROSSI at 19:02 PDT Yes, there's a bug in there somewhere, but I haven't been able to get it to happen on my end yet. I am at work on it though. ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 35 Sat Sep 29, 1990 J.DAVIS50 at 21:11 PDT Hello there NOvaterm is a GREAT term prg.I am having one problem with version 9.2 that I did not have with version 8.1 and that is in the Modem init and autodial areas *h When I try to autodial I do all that th docs say and yet When I hit enter to start the process the prg starts dialing the first number in the selected list It then jumps to terminal mode.I still get modem responses and all that but autodial does not work. This is rather frustrating.I have offset this to some degree by using macros to dial the various BBSes. Also the intial modem string that I put into the terminal area settings does not work, .I have to manualy set modem string upon starting up.Both of these features worked fine in version 8.2. I am using a aprotek minimodem c inthe hayes/1670 mode ------------ Category 8, Topic 8 Message 36 Sun Sep 30, 1990 VOYAGER-1 at 08:52 EDT I had the same problem when I first tested 9.2. I selected the Old 1670 modem mod and everything worked fine. Try using some of the other modem modules and see if that helps. ------------
