I just happened to talk to one of our FlagShip Product Support people (CMD).... 1. Jiffy Dos Version 6 (just released) now supports a built-in dual drive file copier. List the directory, then tag selected files, or tag the whole directory for copying. Many more features including adjustable sector interleave.... more later... 2. HD Series Hard Drive for the 64 and 128!! Wow!! More on this one, later. 3. RAMLINK is a hardware interface (multi-purpose) for the cartridge port. For use with REU's, and other devices this plug-in addition lets you turn off the computer, without destroying the REU data. Turning it on the next day will find the REU still retaining the data that you stored in it from the previous day (or last week). With built in Jiffy commands, and a full blown Jiffy RAMDOS, plus allowing additional memory units to be attached this device looks very promising! Gee, all this from one booth!! I'll try to get a press release up in the Libraries as soon as possible. ------------ Category 2, Topic 17 Message 8 Fri Sep 22, 1989 H.HERMAN1 at 04:19 EDT Bill, With RAMLINK can we now plug in multiple #1750's,for upward of one Meg RAM, or one #1750, and other peripherals like QBB, etc.? ------------ Category 2, Topic 17 Message 9 Fri Sep 22, 1989 C128-BILL [SYSOP] at 08:09 EDT I was told 4 megs are possible, but since this is in the final design stages, it could change. Not even the AT drives (1.2 meg) work with the 81 board.:( Just saw an extensive demo of a B-8 program called I-Paint. Using the C-128 (80 col. 64K RAM, mouse driven). Very nice graphics that rivals the now famous Amiga quality. 640X400 (8X8) interlace pictures were excellent quality!! Modes include Clip & Paste, Hold & Recover, Wide, Draw, File, Printer, Zoom, mono, invert... just for starters. 4,096 colors on a 1084S monitor looked stunning. I have a Zenith 135 composite RGBI monitor being used in composite mode with my shiney new C128D. It has served me faithfully without more than a little dust attracted to the screen with my C64 for many years. However, when I attached the C128 to it in composite mode (no RGBI cable to attach that way yet) & turn them all on, no matter what I have other than the monitor & C128D or don't have attached in addtion to those pieces of equipment the display to the monitor bounces up and down perhaps half a letter line height for several minutes. After the computer has been on a while this problem seems to stop. Do you think I should try to erradicate the problem by burning in the C128D? Any Suggestions and explanations welcome. (&, No, HardHat, I do not think an offering of fresh strawberries to the Box Turtle will cure it!) Ted, who would really like to avoid computer withdrawal if possible ------------ Category 11, Topic 36 Message 2 Wed Sep 27, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 18:11 PDT Hi Ted, Bouncing display, hmm.... Well, considering the fact that the monitor works well with the C64, it appears the problem may be with the 128. However, due to differences in the components used in the two machines, the problem could be related at least in part to the monitor also. Here's what I suggest to start with. Try turning on the monitor and allowing it to warm up for a few minutes before turning on the 128. If that solves the problem, a minor adjustment to the AGC control (hidden inside the monito) should do the trick. If, on the other hand, there is no change to the symptoms, then the problem lies in the 128. It's possible that "burning" in the 128 may help. At least I don't see where it would hurt. Let me know what happens. ------------ Category 11, Topic 36 Message 3 Wed Sep 27, 1989 DO-RAE-MI [Ted] at 22:26 EDT Will let you know, Doc. I KNOW what the problem is, but it took about ALL the replies here to see it. MANY fast-copiers use a disk-formatting routine which ONLY headers the sectors on the target tracks, but does not checksum the headers or the data portion of the sector. After all, THIER routines will be writing to those 'bad' sectors, not yours. Unfortunately, if you don't copy ALL sectors of a source diskette to the newly formatted destination, you're left with sectors to which you can successfully WRITE, but which cannot be read until after they've been written to. (there's no valid checksum). The net result is that you're left with a perfectly good copy which cannot have anything else added to it. One of my first fast-copiers did that nastiness: It took too much time to checksum EVERY sector and header. Eventually, I found a 'trick' way to do it, and now my target diskettes can be copied to by normal file-copiers, and by SAVE. I called a bunch of places and nobody sold the head(s) alone. One place told me that only the whole assembly is replaced (someone said that in a previous message). He said a new assembly was $185 new or $100 with a trade in of the old assembly. I saw message #9 and decided to check out the head. I measured the correct resistance at all the points, so I thought maybe it wasn't a bad head. Anyway, I brought it into a place that said they repair the drives for $50. I'll spare you the details, but the result was that they did fix the drive for the $50 they promised. The write-up said that they aligned the heads (I know it WAS in alignment), they cleaned the heads (I did that myself by hand), adjusted the speed, and adjusted the damping mechanism. Does anyone know what this damping mechanism is? I'm happy they repai it, but I'd like to figure out exactly what was wrong in case it happens again. For all I know they may have just popped in a new drive assembly. Well, anyway, I want to thank everyone for their help. No CBM drive I'm familiar with will permit more than 4 channels. The Lt. Kernal, on the other hand, allows 7 REAL files plus the error- channel (for a total of 8 files) to be open simultaneously. I disassembled AND commented the whole thing. You can do WONDERFUL tricks with the '81. Albeit, not with the SAME programs which run on the '41 and '71, but WONDERFUL tricks. The 1581 is just now becoming accepted by the third-party programmers. Give it a chance. The same neat resources exist inside the '81 as do in the smaller drives. About the only difference is that the '81 uses a Western Digital controller chip to handle the physical functions of the transport. But that chip can be made to do some pretty screwy things with the right programming. MOST specifically, though, I want to address the 'impossibilty' of fastcopiers. NEGATIVE, again. The '81 should be MORE conducive to doing it than the earlier drives were. The resources are richer, and better laid out. The code is less obtuse and better organized. The hardware is more logical with fewer 'shortcuts' having been taken. All in all -- bugs included -- the 1581 is a drive far superior to any other CBM has marketed.... I'm not playing favorites: So far I've hated every drive they've put out! Brown Boxes is selling the QBB for $129, and the QBB-B for $119, plus $3 shipping. (Some distributors have advertised QBB for less.) The two in combination will allow for a 128k Ramdisk, or it can be partitioned, just as the QBB operates. The QBB-B is not a substitute for the QBB, but an addition, giving the extra 64k of RAM. Because there are now two units (plus a third, a REU?), an Aprospand card is required. Brown Boxes is not offering any special deals to present owners of QBB. However, for new buyers, those purchasing the QBB and QBB-B, Brown Boxes offers a $20 discount, or a free Aprospand unit. Using the two boxes requires new QBB Manager software. I was told that the 64 mode Manager is just about complete, and work on the 128 Manager will be completed shortly. [I have no information as to whether or not Herne's QDISK (for CP/M+) will operate on the combination.] I also do not know if they have begun shipping the new units, or may be waiting to complete the 128 Manager software first. Brown Boxes also offers group purchase pricing. However, for this discount they will only ship the group order to one location. For a "scattered" group, it is then necessary to re-package, and re-mail the units to buyers. I will be trying to get a "group" together here, and on two other nets. Allowing for the added costs, a QBB _including_ shipping would probably cost $107, and a QBB-B, $103. [For anyone who can stop by and pick up their units at my place in NYC, so that I don't have to re-package and mail them, the cost would be $97, and $93.] If anyone is interested in joining a group purchase, please send me e-mail, letting me know. Only if enough people respond to make up a group, I'll write back with info as to where to send your check.
