I haven't done an IDE, but have done several replacements in CMD units.. Upgrading to a larger SCSI drive is just a matter of mounting the new drive (usually the mounting screws are in the standard positions), and plugging the SCSI cable and the power connector into the new drive's connectors. Couldn't be easier. Two things to be aware of are: 1) That the replacement drive has the SCSI terminator resistors installed (those multi-pin things that are plugged into the drive's circuit board right near the SCSI connector) - generally there's three of them. 2) Jumpers on the drive should be set for SCSI device '0'. If it/they aren't, when you run the llformat prg, you will see that it won't detect device zero when it scans for it. You need it as device zero, as that's the device where the system will want to be created. Some drives have another jumper on-board which is used to set operating mode (or somesuch). If that isn't in the right position, then drive won't spin when powered-up. ..so those are pretty straightforward. One more point is that I understand that upgrading to some larger drives / or brands of drives (I'm thinking specifically of IBM brand here) may necessitate an upgrade to the latest DOS, plus an upgraded boot ROM. I recently upgraded my HD-40 (had Quantum drive) to a 240 meg Quantum. No additionals needed. I am now upgrading a friend's HD-20.. It originally had a Seagate mech (yecchh), was upped to a 70 Meg Rodime (yecchh), and now going to a 200 Meg IBM. Looks like the latest upgrade requires the latest HDOS (v1.92) and boot ROM (2.78) (just got them in, and I'll probably do it tomorrow) I'm partial (in my limited experience) to Quantum.. I didn't care for what I saw of the Seagate, or what I've read at other times. This isn't to say whether Maxtor or Conner are great (maybe?), good, ok, etc. I just don't have experience with them. So yes, in most cases you this no longer deprives the author... just us poor sucker distributors who thought we were doing folks a favor by buying up what was left and keeping it legally available. And because games in general are so easy to get for free now, those few new titles that have been released in the last couple of years don't sell enough to make it worth even writing, let alone distributing. The wide variety of emulators currently being produced has greatly helped but programming on an emulator is to be simply put, 'anal'. No, what we need is a Commodore 64 PC card in which would contain all the Commodore chips "minimal cost at best" and a quality peice of software to work with the hardware to emulate exactly how a commodore would work. The wide variety (unfortunately) this is the truth! I truely enjoy everything available for the C64 now, but I do not plan on staying on it forever. If there wa= s still a big market I would most certainly do so, but alas, as with most people, the demise of Run took some wind out of my sails - althought I am STILL very MUCH a commie.... But the real reason I am writing is COMPATIBILITY. There has GOT to be a patch of some sort for Word or WP that will sucessfully import a C=3D wor= d processing file - INCLUDING FORMATTING (e.g. bold, italics, etc.). Does anyone know where? What I want to do is to be able to convert a Word file into a C=3D compatible file, bring it home, edit it, save it, take it back to work, and open it back up in Word, and have all of the editing, formatting etc that I did on the C=3D be there. But balancing that, right in the original laws, was that IDEAS could NOT be copyrighted, only the EXPRESSION of ideas. In other words, the laws originally intended to benefit both the author (while they were alive) and the PUBLIC too, by letting everyone else benefit from the IDEAS created.=20 Just for what its worth, as I rarely see any posts about copyright law, where the writer has a clue what they are talking about. I won't even get started on Trademarks and Patents.... There is a balance here, folks! You can argue forever about whether or no= t the LETTER of the law has been violated in some case. But the SPIRIT of the law is plain; once the original author of a work dies, its public domain for everybody else! This allows both groups to benefit, progress t= o be made, and so on. The difficulty arose when the lawmakers could not decide where software should fit in, legally, so they treated it like a text work. All sorts of screwy problems now result, and the laws have not been addressed yet, to fix them. Whatever. Enough of that... But, you need a grasp of Commodore's early history, to put this all into better perspective. Commodore themselves GOT POPULAR by stealing other people's copyrights! I'm talking about them doing unauthorized Vic20 ports of Space Invaders, Galaxian, Pac-Man, Lunar Lander, Night Driver, Rally-X, Avalanche / Kaboom!, and so on. In other words, the first dozen or so Vic20 carts are about half filled with "pirated" games! Guess what? Is it any mystery that the Commodore computers later had a piracy mindset heavily in place? The manufacturers did it. So did lots of users, later. I'm not arguing whether any of this is right, or is wrong. I'm just saying, it happens now, it has happened before, etc, etc... I can think of some things that would help out, but the= =20 > question is...who is going to take a look at GEOS and do the revisions=20 > necessary to compliment the S-CPU? As a fellow geoJunky, and a sometimes GEOS programmer, I'd like to throw my own pennies into the mix. 1. Would GEOS be a better OS after a revision: YES! Lord knows there is so much held back potential in this little baby tha= t most of us can hardly stand it. Better ram support would be an excellent start-- some virtual memory routines to allow bigger and more powerful software. This could include SuperCPU memory-- but need not. =20 Having GEOS internally gateWayized, where drivers are files separate f= rom the CONFIGURE program, would do wonders for hardware compatibility and eliminate the constant patching and repatching to make new drives work wi= th GEOS. New hardware-- all you need is a new driver!=20 Another great trick of gateWay's is the Swapper, which is a greatly imp= roved geoWizard, where true task switching can take place. However, at present= , if you want these features, you have to take the damn gateWay desktop along = for the ride. Give me icons, or give me death! 2. Now, ought someone revise GEOS: Absolutely, positively NO! Although I'd give my left arm for all those nice features in the GEOS k= ernel, I know that it will come at a cost too dear-- compatibility. Already the= re are tons of great little GEOS programs I've come across which don't work or barely work with version 2.0, as they were written for 1.3. If these revisions were to be made to the GEOS kernel, a great many more programs would suddenly become rotting piles of bits. Already there is the compatibility gap between GEOS 64 and 128... and an even larger one betwe= en gateWay and the standard GEOSs. With a revised GEOS coming in to use, th= is gap would widen and people would go back to version 2.0 with tears in the= ir eyes, just as I went back to GEOS 64 after ooohing and ahhhing at both GE= OS 128 and gateWay's kernel features. And why would they go back? For the sake = of the=20 software they were able to run (including the deskTop in gateWay's case). Now, you may be wondering: Sure, this may be indeed happen, but so wha= t? Windows 3.1 replaced its predecessor without a glitch, and Windows 95 app= ears to be leaving 3.1 behind. Not only is software ported over... but even b= igger and better things are filling the gaps... this could happen for GEOS too, right? NO! Unlike Windows, we Commie folk don't have thousands of softwa= re companies clawing at each other to upgrade their software, and make old software compatible again. If geoPublish doesn't work with a new version of GEOS... that means BYE BYE for desk-top publishing in GEOS. Now, is there a compromise? Probably. Surely some things can be done to the GEOS kernel that will maintain compatibility, while giving us at leas= t some of the new changes we crave. However, whoever does so, and that wou= ld have to be GeoWorks, which still holds all the cards on GEOS 64/128, woul= d have to tread very very lightly, lest they find themselves holding a=20 briliantly written but useless GEOS upgrade. I can imagine the anger and frustration you must have felt. I'm sure I speak fo= r the rest of the Vic fans present when I say that I accept your apology. As someone who is slowly but safely creating a web.presence for one of yesteryears legends I have had quite a few requests to "hurry up and get = it online". It= can be very ungratifying to put a lot of time into a project if noone seems t= o appreciate it. I speak from personal experience; during the late eighties= /early nineties I didn't get any feedback on my numerous contributions to the "S= cene". I'm happy to hear that despite this setback you have been able to collect= all those cart-images. I recently made contact with a guy in the UK who is also collecting Vic20 programs, on cart as well as on disk/tape. I'll talk to him and see if he= has anything to offer, and whether or not he wants to share it with the publi= c. I will gladly share whatever Vic-stuff I have with the public. Unfortunat= ely I fear that I haven't got that much (if any) software that you don't alread= y have in your possesion. However I do own a number of Danish/Norwegian magazine= s with Vic-related articles that I could dig up and digitize. If it doesn't take up to much space I can store= it myself, otherwise I would recommend putting it in /pub/cbm/vic20 at ftp.f= unet.fi. I would also be more than willing to help you HTMLize documents, design & maintain a web.presence and publish a european mirror on the web. There are, however, a number of things I cannot do for this project: 1) I= 've got no room for my Vic in this tiny flat (which explains why it is in sto= rage at my parents house) so I can't really test/review any software without h= aving to make some prior arrangements. 2) I can't purchase any Vic-related prod= ucts for the project - what little money I have is primarily spent to support = my existance and my other hobby: comics. -------------------------------------------------------------------------= ---- Jan Lund Thomsen (aka Qed/Triangle 3532) Lystrup, Den= mark C64/RPG/INWO/Warner Bros/Disney/Anthro/Comics-addict and all-around nice = guy. ----------- Email: Kwed@pip.dknet.dk ---------- Fido: 2:238/128.11 ------= ---- #! rnews 1756 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!news1.best.com!news.texas.net!news.kei.com!newsf= eed.internetmci.com!news.sprintlink.net!news-stk-200.sprintlink.net!news.= sprintlink.net!news-stk-11.sprintlink.net!EU.net!usenet2.news.uk.psi.net!= uknet!usenet1.news.uk.psi.net!uknet!dispatch.news.demon.net!demon!mail2ne= ws.demon.co.uk!scarletl.demon.co.uk From: John J McGlinchey Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: Re: Q on 'Freeze Machine' by Eversham Micros Date: Sun, 4 Aug 96 21:53:12 GMT Organization: Scarlet Logic Lines: 24 Message-ID: <9608042153.AA00066@scarletl.demon.co.uk> References: <4tia1b$ftq@bmdhh222.bnr.ca> X-NNTP-Posting-Host: scarletl.demon.co.uk X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL3] X-Mail2News-Path: disperse.demon.co.uk!post.demon.co.uk!scarletl.demon.co= .uk Paul Sampson (psampson@nortel.ca) wrote: : Recently I picked up this cart built by Eversham Micros. No, there's no phone number you need to call.. no long distance charges to rack up..just TELNET to 147.26.162.107 and login as "bbs". My buddy in Arizona finally sent that drive over, so the system is even bigger and better than previous. I was able to get Murder Motel, Galactic Empire, and a couple other online games in there this time. However, there's still no Commodore graphics support, or file transfer abilities.. ah well, can't have it all. - Bo (The Zacman) #! rnews 757 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!spool.mu.edu!howland.reston.ans.net!swrinde!cs.u= texas.edu!uwm.edu!lll-winken.llnl.gov!enews.sgi.com!news.mathworks.com!ne= wsfeed.internetmci.com!aldehyde.netone.com!news.sprintlink.net!news-fw-12= .sprintlink.net!news.us.net!usenet From: mhall59@mail.us.net (Michael W.
