Commodore Press Release: Winter CES 1987 Transcribed for *StarShip* and *FlagShip* members of GEnie and Delphi by *deb!* from Press Releases distributed at CES. For Immediate Release --------------------- AMIGA HEADS COMMODORE'S FULL-RANGE COMMITMENT TO COMPUTERS State-Of-The-Art System Opens Creative Niche Markets in First Year With the introduction of the PC10-1 and PC10-2 computers, Commodore can now boast of producing the most complete line of microcomputers in the industry. Not only is Commodore a leading force in the price/performance category offered by the PC10 family of IBM PC compatible computers, but it is the undisputed leader in home computers with the Commodore 64 and the Commodore 128. And, of course, it claims the most advanced microcomputer to date, the Amiga personal computer. Launched in July 1985, the Amiga was hailed by leading computer publications as being the most technologically advanced microcomputer on the market. Its proprietary custom chips produce stunning graphics and symphonic sound found in computers costingup to 10 times as much -- and some capabilities that could not be found on any other computer at any price. Amiga also was the first microcomputer in its price range to offer "multitasking" which allows business persons to perform several tasks at once, unleashing the hidden productivity of the computer. SOFTWARE -------- More than 350 commercially available software programs already have been developed to take advantage of the Amiga's advanced capabilities. In addition, hundreds of programs have been written by experienced developers who have donated the programs to the public. Those programs, featuring a wide range of business, home and school applications, are available free on many commercial bulletin board systems, such as CompuServe, QuantumLink and BIX. GRAPHICS -------- Amiga has carved a new niche in the marketplace. Professional graphics design artists once needed machines costing tens of thousands of dollards to add computer capabilities to their work. But Amiga offers a remarkable palette of 4,096 colors and near photographic image clarity. Amiga has been used to create special effects for such television shows as "Amazing Stories." When producers of "Miami Vice" wanted to create state-of-the-art design for their show, they chose to use Amiga as a background piece on the set. The Philadelphia Phillies use Amiga to design graphics on the team's scoreboard at Veteran's Stadium. And graduate students at Ohio State University earn their master's degrees in art working in Amiga-equipped computer graphics laboratories. VIDEO APPLICATIONS ------------------ Amiga was the first microcomputer to offer advanced video applications. The Amiga can "digitize" images, that is, capture a live image and save it in the computer's memory. once stored, the computer can then perform numerous artistic feats, such as enhancing the color, dropping out the background or adding special effects. Amiga can also produce animation sequences, which owners of more expensive computers can only contemplate. MUSIC COMPUTER -------------- The Amiga can work in conjunction with the MIDI system to add new dimensions to rock bands. By using any of a number of commercially available software programs, users can write their own music with Amiga, even if they have no background in music. Additionally the music can be played over 4 quality voices and in stereo sound. GAMES ----- Because of its advanced custom chips, Amiga is the perfect game computer. Many software developers have taken advantage of Amiga's unique color and sound qualities to produce games that add such effects as the sound of a jet's engines, the shuffling of a deck of cards or the squeaking of basketball player's sneakers on the court. BUSINESS APPLICATIONS --------------------- But Amiga is more than fun and games, it is a heavy-duty business computer that can access 8 MBytes of memory. Already scores of business programs have been written for Amiga. Amiga's versatility makes it the perfect business computer for professionals in the creative industries. EDUCATIONAL APPLICATIONS ------------------------ The educational community has also adopted the Amiga. Software programs are available to help students learn virtually every subject from beginning grammar to trigonometry. # # #
