********** Topic 28 Fri Sep 19, 1986 WHIRT [WDHIRT] (Forwarded) Sub: Big Blue Reader Big Blue reader program really does work! ********** ---------- Category 14, Topic 28 Message 1 Fri Sep 19, 1986 WHIRT [WDHIRT] (Forwarded) Good to see the Big Blue reader demo uploaded here. I've used the program and it works flawlessly. In fact, since none of our PC's at work have modems, I downloaded a bunch of PC P.D. programs on my 128 using Sixth Sense and then copyed them to a MS-DOS disk (which you format using the program. MS-DOS 2.1 disks is what the program formats). Only complaint is that CBM files larger than 52K can not be transferred to a MS-DOS disk because the entire CBM file must be in memory to be written to a MS-DOS disk. Well I guess you can't have everything. Can't it just transfer from drive 8 to drive 9 ?!? ** ---------- Category 14, Topic 28 Message 5 Wed Sep 24, 1986 SURVIVOR [S. Good to see a MSDOS reader in the PD (((I think BIG BLUE READER almost could have been))) ---------- Category 14, Topic 28 Message 9 Mon Oct 06, 1986 MICHAEL.M at 20:25 EDT (After re-reading this topic)...... I believe that Big Blue Reader doesnt require the entire file to be in memory. Once a portion of a file is saved, subsequent calls back to the same file will begin where they left off. The file deb! mentioned (P.D. and in our libraries now) is called CROSSLINK. It is a little different from Big Blue Reader, but just as powerful. -Mike ---------- Category 14, Topic 28 Message 10 Wed Oct 08, 1986 KEVIN-S. [KeS] at 07:24 PDT You beat me to it, Mike! Yes, BBR will print/copy files of any size: but only 50k at a time! XLINK will only handle files of about 45k. Stay tuned. The thing also has a few 1571 (native- mode) utilities included. I'm sure your club will enjoy it. Do download the CROSSLINK file as well. It has a few options that might also come in handy to you/your club. -Mike ---------- Category 14, Topic 28 Message 17 Fri Oct 10, 1986 PHUNT [Pat] at 07:50 EDT OOPS! I found it, in File #2314. It's called CROSSLINK.LBR. (I was looking for just plain CROSSLINK.) Sorry! Pat ---------- Category 14, Topic 28 Message 18 Mon Oct 13, 1986 JTC. at 21:54 EDT Concerning Crosslink.lbr, It does everything you can imagine and more! I spent the weekend downloading IBM programs (.c om,.exe,.arc,.txt,--you name it) to CP/M ds disks using IMP. I think I used this mode because of the similarities in file-naming conventions and also because I was able then to de-arc files that were too large (45K) to transfer. I was then able to transfer smaller files individually although this took quite some time. I had already brought home some disks from the office formatted with DOS 3.2. To make an already long story short, everything worked! I transferred a copy of arce.com to unsqueeze the arc files I d/l'ed and everything was great. You may ask why go to all the trouble ?? First, to prove it could be done-- and also because I don't have a modem at work and now my "lowly" 128 allows me to get and use just about any sort of software you can imagine (I wonder how to get this thing to read and write an Apple GCR disk?). My only question is now that I'm finally getting a 1750, will Crosslink make use of the RAM inn order to transfer larger files or will it require some changes to the Basic section and what might they be? Mr. Garamszeghy has opened-up new frontiers for us! JC ---------- Category 14, Topic 28 Message 19 Sun Jan 18, 1987 MICHAEL.M [-:SysOp:-] at 12:26 EST S.O.G.W.A.P is at it again. In addition to their now infamous standard version of Big Blue Reader which allows users to transfer files generated on most IBM-comatible software to Commodore DOS files, they now produce Big Blue Reader CP/M giving you the added advantage of CP/M read and write capabilities. This new version includes all the standard BBR functions, and is priced at $44.95. If you are already a BBR owner, you can upgrade to the new version by sending them your disk and $15. (CA residents add $2.90 tax). S.O.G.W.A.P. 611 Boccaccio Avenue Venice, CA 90291 (213) 822-1138 -=:Mike:=- ----------
