I haven't talked to Ed Parry, but understand that X-Modem is one of the things he's been looking into...don't know if he's had any luck...but I, too would like to know if it's coming up (have been testing EBBS and getting rave reviews...just need X-Mo for all my non-Commodore users!) -Deb...have YOU heard anything from Ed? -GaryB ------------ Category 9, Topic 20 Message 2 Mon Feb 23, 1987 MICHAEL.M [-:SysOp:-] at 03:53 EST I had a chance to meet with Mr Parry's associate at the Commodore Show and asked him just that question, Gary. YEP! The new EBBS includes CRC Xmodem. We should see some support for the program here on the FlagShip in the coming months, as the co-author will be acquiring a GEnie account. -=:Mike:=- ------------ Category 9, Topic 20 Message 3 Tue Feb 24, 1987 GBARRETT [VISION100] at 22:48 CST Great, Michael!!! -I've been doing a hands-on review of as many of the 128- specific BBS programs as I can get my hands on for a 128-only publication we know of here (yes, Loren, installment one is in the mail today) and have found EBBS to be the most POPULAR to date...so x-mo will only enhance that!!! -GaryB ------------ Category 9, Topic 20 Message 5 Sat Mar 07, 1987 JIM.MAC [[*SysOp*]] at 18:15 EST Ed Parry is now online with us here. Hopefully he will drop in here and answer questions about EBBS. You can reach him viva mail, his address is EBBS. -Jim ------------ Category 9, Topic 20 Message 6 Tue May 05, 1987 M.LUSHER at 00:29 CDT A question to Ed Parry: I've gotten the source code for the 128 version of APPEND2 by David Myers but I was wondering how the xmodem ml is used in a program. I'd appreciate it if you could answer this as I would like to write a 128 terminal program to be used by some local users on a bbs running your bbs program. Thanks ------------ Topic 26 Fri Jul 10, 1987 M.LUSHER (Forwarded) Sub: Ebbs & the disappearing descriptions Parts of the file descriptions are disappearing after deleting files and validating the disk. 11 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 1 Fri Jul 10, 1987 M.LUSHER (Forwarded) This is the first time I've started a topic so please bear with me. I've been trying out the EBBS for the 128 and it seems to be a nice program, except I've noticed that parts of the file descriptions have been disappearing from the relative files. I think this only occurs after I've deleted some of the files from the list and then validate the disk. I'm always validating the system files disk due to the number of deletions, uploads, etc. Oh, I forgot to mention I'm using a 1571 disk drive. If anyone has similar problems or if the author can explain to me what is going on I'd really appreciate it. ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 2 Sat Jul 11, 1987 MICHAEL.M [-:SysOp:-] (Forwarded) M.Lusher - Did you install the new upgrade ROM's? If Ed doesnt see this message this weekend, I'll forward your message to him on his BBS. - Mike ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 3 Sun Jul 12, 1987 M.LUSHER (Forwarded) Mike - Yes I did intstall the new upgrade ROM's. I was running the EBBS v2.3 (I think that was the version) with the original ROM chip. I didn't notice this problem then, but I hadn't really done much in the way of deleting files with that version. I'm now using the latest EBBS and have been deleting and adding to the DL list quite a lot. Mike Lusher ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 4 Mon Jul 13, 1987 S.LEWIS (Forwarded) I've found that validating any diskette with relative files can lead to strange things. There is no valid basis for argument on this, just a hunch that I've had for quite some time. And never, EVER, validate a 9060 or 9090! Ask anybody who has... Steve ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 5 Tue Jul 14, 1987 M.LUSHER (Forwarded) I further update on my data disappearing from the relative files for the EBBS. I just lost a user from the user log. I had a new user call and he entered an "application". His information totall replaced another users'. As luck would have it I had this information on a backup disk. This had happened to me once before while using the earlier version of EBBS v2.3. I really need to know if this is being caused by my validating the disk, as mentioned in a prior reply, or wether this could be a programming error. I don't think my users will appreciate having to re-apply every so often. PS. Did I start this topic in the wrong category? Should I have put this in category 9 the *Flagship* BBS resource? ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 6 Wed Jul 15, 1987 DEB at 03:46 EDT Well, never fear, we moved it over to the BBS area for ya! I imagine Ed might be able to shed some more light on his program, but I have found it is never safe to mess much with disks which have REL files on them! I never validate them. If there becomes a disk error that my BBS didn't handle correctly, like an open file, it move EVERYTHING off the disk and start from scratch. <> ::grin:: Also, from a programming standpoint, there are several well known bugs with REL file reads/writes and the pointers. If you use REL files, they just HAVE to have the pointer positioned EVERY time, and TWICE, to make sure! These buggies have existed in CBM DOS versions since the days of the creation of REL files. ...and are you using a 1571?! with new or old ROMS?! *deb!* ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 7 Wed Jul 15, 1987 MICHAEL.M [-:SysOp:-] at 20:10 EDT I've already asked about the ROM's, deb. [grin] Also, I am aware that many people do indeed have REL file problems, but again I must lead a charmed life in this respect. COLOR-64 BBS uses REL files, and after using it for quite a while (with disk validates *every* night at midnight on three 1541's and an SFD), there was never a problem. Hard to say whether the EBBS problem is hardware or software problematic, but Ed Parry would be the best person to tell us, since he gets more feedback on the program. (Ed, where are you?!). I'll give a call to CoreWars this evening and ask him about it. ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 8 Wed Jul 15, 1987 DEB at 21:36 EDT Mike: most REL file bugs are completely controllable....so its not really a surprise that Greg's Color64 does it *right*! Validates are a problem on SFD's and 8250's....and I've NEVER trusted a validate on a 1571. Oh, ED?! ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 9 Thu Jul 16, 1987 SPARROW.J at 00:43 EDT According to the 1581 manual, the double pointer set fix is not longer necessary with CBM DOS release 3D. Although verification of this is tricky since the error appears to be sporatic in a simple test (acces relative file data randomly for one hour) I did not have one miscue. --Sparrow James ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 10 Sat Jul 25, 1987 J.FOLSOM [PRIDES XING] at 10:52 PDT I've been running the various versions of EBBS since its inception and have never seen the problem described. Note that EBBS does a COLLECT automatically at midnight. I presume (since a 1571 is involved) that we're talking about EBBS128 (?). It sounds as though there is both a lot of things being put on that single drive and that there might be something amiss in the config. file. ------------ Category 9, Topic 26 Message 11 Sun Aug 23, 1987 FINNER [Tom Sawyer] at 13:57 PDT Deb: Ed does set the pointer twice at every access to a REL file. I've had no problems at all with it, not even during validation. Michael.M: Ed doesn't have a BBS. M.Luscher: The problem isn't with your drive. Ed never checked the length of the description, and accepted anything. So, when you create a new DL file, the description could overwrite the next record partially. As long as there's nothing there, that's no big problem. But as soon as you add something to that next record, or tell EBBS to delete it, it wipes out the last part of the description from the previous record. I think Ed fixed this problem in v3.0. I could be wrong tho. If you need the fix for this, just let me know. It's real easy, and you could probably figure it out yourself. P.S. Are you a registered sysop with the source code? If not, I'm afraid I can't help you.
