Commodore Users' Groups run BBSs and don't "undermine" Q-Link too much, so why can't Commodore? They need to be innovative anyway. Also, the last time I called Q-Link (in March I believe) it really seemed to be dying out. GEnie is a lot harder to use, but it's so much more versatile and has more life in it. I'd call, except I don't call *ANY* LD boards, and I'm not going to make Commodore's own my exception. It's hard enough to keep up with the 3 local boards I'm on, along with this service. :) Also, I can hardly call Commodore's power-up programs with the A500 and A3000 lack of support. Apple is dumping the Apple II line too, but I don't see them discounting the Macs like that (or if they are, they're doing it awfully quietly). Commodore's gotta go where the sales are, and the fact is, they've sold 3 million Amigas, and Amiga buyers in general seem more eager to buy new hardware than 8-bit owners (though the 8-bitters who remain are awfully dedicated, myself included. :) ) ------------ Category 1, Topic 5 Message 6 Fri Jul 12, 1991 C128-BILL [Bill] at 13:11 EDT I assumed that the profit margin was a tad better on the Amiga Hardware, too. However, if it will accept Hayes type commands, sending it an ATZ will return it to its default state, or to its stored default profile state, if this feature is implemented. Often with different term programs, a modem has to be set differently, so any initialization string will vary from one program to another. Is there anything specific you are trying to do? Maybe someone else with more knowledge about the 1660 can help out. Howie ------------ Category 1, Topic 19 Message 4 Sun Jul 07, 1991 VOYAGER-1 [Gary V] at 20:34 EDT The 1660 is the old 300 baud modem and it does not work with Hayes commands. Instead it uses peeks and pokes to transfer data and work with it's command registers. It has been quite some time since I did any programing for it, but if you could be a bit more specific, I could dig out the manual, look up the info and explain it as best as I can. THanx, Mike Curcio ------------ Category 1, Topic 19 Message 6 Wed Jul 10, 1991 H.HERMAN1 at 05:05 EDT Mike, Since Gary tells us that the 1660 doesn't use a subset of the Hayes commands, all that stuff I posted before, about `AT' just won't work. So, just forget everything I said before. I'll try again now. Have you checked to see if Novaterm will let you select the 1660 modem as an option? If it does, then it should send whatever commands the 1660 needs to run right. If the 1660 isn't listed as an option, you might try some others that are, other than a Hayes compatable. If you find another one that works, just stick with it. ! I hope I did better this time, but who knows? :/ Howie ------------ Category 1, Topic 19 Message 7 Wed Jul 10, 1991 VOYAGER-1 [Gary V] at 15:23 EDT Howie, I'm rather sure that there is a 1660 module for novaterm. I sort of remember trying it a year or so ago when we were having the transfer bugs with the original release of 9.0 . I wanted to see if any of the trouble was within the modem modules, so I dragged my old 1660 out of the bottom of a drawer to see. It made no difference with the transfer bug, but it did work fine. Gary ------------ Category 1, Topic 19 Message 8 Wed Jul 10, 1991 M.CURCIO at 23:57 PDT Gary, novaterm does have the 1660 module, but when I use it , it doesn't seem to work! What is this transfer bug mentioned? Do you think I should try to download it again? In the program there is a function that is modem initialization, when I use this function the program shows me the command ATDT, but this doesn't work also. I have loaded the module for the 1660, but that doesn't work either...I also loaded the module for the volks modem and that works sometimes. Any idea why this doesn't work? I like this program...but it would be nice if it worked right! Any help you can give me is appreciated! If Novaterm's modem initialization is sending the `AT' stuff, then this may be what is confusing the 1660. I suspect that a modem initialization may not be necessary when using the 1660 modem. So, try selecting the 1660 modem option, and don't use any initialization. If there is still any prob, let me know. Howie ------------ Category 1, Topic 19 Message 11 Thu Jul 11, 1991 VOYAGER-1 [Gary V] at 07:44 EDT You are on the right track Howie. Sending the Hayes initilization codes is not needed with the 1660 and doing so might be the cause of it not working corectly. Just to make sure of what's going on, I will dig out my 1660 and use it with Novaterm. Mike, the bugs I mentioned were in version 9.0 and they had to do with corrupting uploads. ( there were other minor ones, but this is the one which prevented it's release in the Flagships library ). This upload bug was fixed in 9.1 , but somehow it managed to creap back into version 9.2 I will let you know how to set up and use the 1660 with Nova after I have a chance to re-familiarize myself with it. I'll have to suggest that we buy a 128 for parts when we have our next meeting, which will be this Tuesday. It should be a win/win situation for the group, since I'll buy the keyboard, if it's in sparkling condition. ANYONE happen to have an extra 128 lying around, that was only used by a Grandmother on Sundays for a drive around the block? :) Howie ------------ Category 2, Topic 10 Message 13 Sat Jul 06, 1991 H.HERMAN1 at 16:43 EDT I got it! Howie ------------ Category 2, Topic 10 Message 14 Sat Jul 06, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 17:17 EDT Yes, its better to buy a used C128 that is in good shape and use it for parts if you have to. Considering CIAs are $14 each (c128 has two) and the SID and roms are in sockets just by parting the chips out at 1/2 cost will be worth it. You can also use it as a "floater" and someone in the group can upgrade it with sockets for people that don't have 64K for their VDC (assuming the C128 works). $79 is very close to the cost of a stripped C128 and I think you made the right choice returning it. ------------ ************ Topic 15 Tue Jun 11, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 20:41 EDT Sub: Shiver me timbers! where is the eye patch? 8 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 2, Topic 15 Message 7 Thu Jul 11, 1991 H.HERMAN1 at 11:31 EDT This may be a bit off the subject, but... Am I reading this thing right? I subscribe to a net that does news retrieval (yup!), and they charge $1.90 per minute. That's running at 2400 baud, the speed offering the biggest bang for the buck, or another way of saying it, the most bytes for the buck. They also charge for `information units', which they define as 1,000 characters, INCLUDING spaces and carriage returns. All of their data bases carry the $1.90 per minute charge, and different charges for those `information units'. One of their bases charges $1.65 per info unit. That's for each 1,000 characters including those spaces and carriage returns. The way I figure it, at 2400 baud, if I sign on for one hour, I'll get billed about $1,500.00. Does this sound right? I suppose in one hour I'd get a lot of data, maybe enough for a short novel. However, I've never paid $1,500 for a book. Nothing close to it. Am I missing something here? :/ Howie ------------ Category 2, Topic 15 Message 8 Fri Jul 12, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 19:38 EDT Sounds like you are missing out on a BIG bill. All those "information" nets are good if you are charging someone $150-$600 an hour (like a lawyer) for your research and you know how to use the databases and with macros to save $$$. Otherwise they aren't worth using. I suppose if you are researching a logo for a national company the $1500 is well spent. Or maybe you are doing background checks on a competing company or looking for someone to manufacture a new product or drug the money is well spent because it saves you time. Otherwise I think the databases are a waste of time and anyone with a passing knowledge of the dewey decimal system and a telephone can do much better at a cheaper price. ------------ ************ Topic 16 Wed Jul 10, 1991 D.SMITH244 at 23:30 EDT Sub: Is CP/M worth it? What do y'all think? ------------ Category 2, Topic 16 Message 2 Wed Jul 10, 1991 R.KNOP1 [Rob Knop] at 23:56 PDT Why CP/M? Technolust is a good reason.... The main reason I've done anything with it is, it's fun to play around with. Of course, as you've heard, there is loads of PD software for it, but at this point there is some pretty impressive PD and Shareware software for the 128's native mode (e.g. DesTerm). Some of the main software advantages are, CP/M uses standard ASCII by default, and there is a good PD text editor available (VDE2.66 is what I use, though I hear that ZDE is a newer version and better). With this, you can view and modify text files that were intended or or need to go to other computers. There also exists PD programs to read MS-DOS disks, and swap to C= native format, so it is a good way to swap programs with an IBM. If you are into programming, it's always fun to look at the machie code of a different processor (Z80 as opposed to 6502 family). Also, there exist PD implementations of various languages (C, Pascal). If you are interested in using CP/M, I would recommend checking out Randy Winchester's article in Issue 28 of Twin Cities 128. That lists a lot of public domain software which is available, as well as explains how you can speed up the operating speed of your CP/M. -Rob Knop ------------ Category 2, Topic 16 Message 3 Thu Jul 11, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 05:30 EDT I echo all that! Also, learning standard programs such as "Dbase" on the CP/M side is virtually like learning them on a PC! ------------ Category 2, Topic 16 Message 4 Thu Jul 11, 1991 H.HERMAN1 at 07:07 EDT CP/M mode is fully one-third of the C128, and it would be a shame to ignore it. Besides, there is an awful lot of software that runs under CP/M that is not duplicated in either the 64 or 128 sides, that you'd miss out on otherwise. One category that I can think of off-hand is file compression utilities. Among others you can unzip, unzoo, unsit, unarc, uncrunch, delibrary, uudecode, and much more. On occasion I wander into other computer RoundTables, and these programs let me access some very interesting files. If I didn't have them, there would be no way for me to read up on all the latest happenings. First, put the old version in and run it. Then do RSAVE TERM DX UX (you might have to do those as 3 separate RSAVE commands. That will take TERM, DX, and UX from the RAM directory and put them on a floppy. Next, turn your machine off for a few seconds, then run version 1.5. Now type INSTALL TERM DX UX (might have to do those as 3 separate commands, also). Voila! You now have TERM with up/downloading capa- bilities in the RAM. Money permitting I am going to tryto mail as many issues by first class (vs bulk mail) as possible to speed the issues to you. Issue#30 will be printed in July and hopefully mailed that same month to everyone. Issue#31 is shaping up nice :) This will be the first issue that is entirely *mine* and I hope you enjoy it. Starting with issue #31 there will be a couple of new additions and changes A "C" programming column A "ML" column A "CP/M" column though I haven't decided exactly what we will target in this column. I have been thinking about a DBASE tutorial and good Dbase type in program(s). A extensive Q&A column. Not a real need for it when you are already online but there are a lot of people who aren't and this may be the only way for readers to track down those answers that have eluded them so far. An editorial column which will probably have to be brutally slashed down to one page an issue. This is be "my" page and I will use it as such. I am sure what I have lined up for Issue#31 will generate some excitement and flames ;) but that's 1/2 the fun :> A GEOS column. I want to target the ML side of GEOS and any neat hacks that can be accomplished. Still haven't nailed down a writer for this column...who knows, maybe I will get a response soon ;) Of course some things won't change! At least one good hardware hack in every issue :) A review of what's the best and hottest C128s programs online. I may include C64 software that fills a need when there aren't native mode programs that do the same. A slightly different view of the C128 world. Tc128 will be produced ENTIRELY on C128s and run on C128s. No Amigas, Macs, IBMs will be used for anything. This will end up including all the ads too though if I can get the C128 to read and dump postscript files I *might* accept ads done on other computers. The masters for the pages, the photo- graphs (scans), everything! will be done on the C128. If I ran a MAC magazine I would insist on everything from top to bottom be done on the Mac, I own and use C128s and I will be producing a C128 magazine and I insist on it and refuse to budge :) There is one more thing I would like to address for the Flagship$ staff, yes, I will be using a spell checker (tongue in cheek;) ------------ ************ Topic 3 Sat Jul 06, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 18:08 EDT Sub: Twin Cities 128 - sample issue a introductory offer for Twin Cities 128 1 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 16, Topic 3 Message 1 Sat Jul 06, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 18:11 EDT For an introductory offer of Twin Cities 128, Parsec will be offering a "try me" package. That is, can the data files be transferred from one version to the other using a CP/M <> MS-DOS copy program, be worked on and then transferred back. The reason for this question stems from the fact that I have no need for DBase to keep my personal records, but wouldn't mind having it to have in order to be able to do work for my employer at home on my 128 instead of a cheap XT clone. Gary ------------ Category 16, Topic 4 Message 3 Mon Jul 08, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 14:56 EDT I don't know since I don't own a clone or Dbase IV or V :) ------------ Category 16, Topic 4 Message 4 Wed Jul 10, 1991 H.HERMAN1 at 05:07 EDT JBEE, I sure would HAVE LIKED to have bought dBASEII for $50. However, since I have it already, and paid several times $50 for it, I'll just have to pass on buying it again.... But, $50 sounds very VERY reasonable. And, YES!!!!! I would love to see dBII articles in Twin Cities, and the MORE the better. AND, some advanced procedures along with the basics for those of us who know the program, and those who don't. Answering Gary's ?, dBASEII programs, and their data files are transportable between CP/M and DOS. Just let Big Blue read over the DOS disk to a CP/M one, boot CP/M, and run. Everything will operate, and appear the same. And, after the first time, and transporting over the program files, only data need be exchanged in future runs. If the DOS side is using a later version of dBASE, it can also be done, but not quite so simply. The structure of the `dbf', data file, as well as the application modules are not interchangeable. To overcome this incompatability, you would have to use the dBASEII self-generators to write some code for accessing the data bases in CP/M. Or, you could modify the DOS code. Later versions added new commands which dBII would not recognize. However, all can be re-coded and do the same tasks. Since the dbf structures are not similiar, it would be necessary to add the additional steps of exporting/importing of the data to conclude the exchange. This may sound a bit involved, but it isn't. Really! Once a procedure is set up for doing this, dBASE itself can be made to `auto run' the entire procedure, so while it might take a few extra minutes of machine time, you don't have to be there while dBASE does it for you. Any information about various techniques for speeding up disk access should go here. 3 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 21, Topic 18 Message 1 Mon Jul 08, 1991 J.HAMBY3 [Jake] at 18:38 PDT I'm interested in programming a fastloader for the C-64 & 1541 (although I plan to branch out into other disk drives once I can afford to buy them). My question is: How in the world do JiffyDos and Action Replay achieve the incredible speed increase of 25 times (not to mention the burst serial routines in the C-128)? From disassembling a few public domain and type-in fastloaders, I know how to get a speed increase of 4-5 times, but 25 (and without using special hardware)? Also, what do these fastloaders do to speed up those programs which don't use the standard Kernal LOAD & SAVE routines? From disassembling the PD routines, I've found that these things are necessary to get a speed increase of 4-5 times: First, the program puts a machine language program into the disk drive buffer RAM, using M-W, 32 bytes at a time. The file name is sent along with the program so the disk drive knows what to look for. Then, the disk drive code is executed. The disk drive looks through the directory for the file name. Then it calls a ROM routine to set it up to the data block of the first track (one fastloader included its own code to do this, but I don't think this would cause a speed increase). Then, the program reads the data into the buffer and calls a ROM routine to convert it from GCR to binary. The program then sends the data to the computer two bytes at a time (through the data and clock lines). The computer receives the data (using precise timing loops so they stay in sync without using a clock line), copies it to a buffer, then transfers it to its final location. Meanwhile, the disk drive is loading the next sector. Here are a few ideas I have for greater speed: First, four lines could be used to transfer the data (data, clock, ATN, and SRQ). However, I'm sure that using the ATN bit would cause any other devices on the serial bus to interfere with the transmission. Also, on the disk drive side, track stepping could be sped up, and on the computer side, the data could be loaded directly into its final location, rather than going through a buffer. Maybe the disk drive program could get one byte, convert it to binary, then send it, then get the next byte, rather than loading the entire sector and storing it to a buffer. Well, if you've managed to follow me this far, what do you think? Perhaps those of you with C-128s could disassemble the burst serial routines and upload your findings. Or perhaps those of you with JiffyDos could disassemble it and find out what makes it work. Any help I could get would be appreciated. Jake Hamby ------------ Category 21, Topic 18 Message 2 Tue Jul 09, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 06:28 EDT Well, I think the "findings" would be interesting as a "message" but not as assembler listings. Though I am no expert on loaders I believe most of the improvement comes on the disk rom side of Jiffydos and not the computer side. I have programmed my own burst and speed up routines using burst mode and loading tracks whole into the C128 with a 1581. It is easily 5x faster than serial routines. So I would say the biggest slow down is probably the drive roms. I believe the specs on the disk drives are 38K or around there and the limit ing factor is the serial roms routines and serial hardware. ------------ Category 21, Topic 18 Message 3 Fri Jul 12, 1991 R.FARQUHAR1 at 20:55 CDT One other speed factor is sector interleave, IF your fastloader can keep up with the lower interleave. One way to illustrate this is to get a 1541- formatted disk and load stuff from it, making note of the load times. Then, copy to a true 1571-formatted disk, using a sector skew of 5. Repeat the experiment. You'll be shocked. That, plus the 8K buffer, is the reason the '81 is so much faster than the 41/71 (the '81's interleave is 1). ------------ that's all folks!
