One 1541 disk and a printed manual (5.5x8.5, three hole punched) which I promptly put in the binder with my RamLink manual. As you may have seen, the manual is practically the same as the HTML manual on Nick Rossi's Web site (http://www.eskimo.com/~voyager/novaterm.html), which I'd read through already. As usual, my coworkers cracked a couple jokes about using such an ol= d system. (For the newer members of the club--I do Technical Support for Western Digital hard drives.) Finally 5 rolled around and I headed home. Fixed up some dinner, then got ready to sit down with the new toy. Installation was simple: copy the entire disk to the RL subdirectory set up for it, then reboot to 64 mode, change to the RL subdir, and Shift-STOP to boot. It asked a few simple questions (what modem, what kind of 80-column screen, how the buffer should be set up) and away we went into Novaterm. I had been using Novaterm 9.5, then moved to the version of Desterm that came with the Swiftlink cartridge. After having to copy over my "phone book" by hand, I was very happy to see that Novaterm 9.6 was able to take my old phone book from 9.5, even though the 9.6 version has a new entry in the phone listings: Terminal Type to use. Both Novaterm 9.6 and Desterm 2 work in the 128 80-column mode for terminal usage. Of course, NovaTerm drops back to 40-col mode when you want to do anything but be in terminal mode; I'm wondering if my 40/80 switch on the monitor is going to wear out soon! However, Desterm tends to drop chars and mess up lines when you read text files or otherwise hav= e lots of text to watch. Perhaps I didn't get the flow control set correctly. I don't quite know. They seem pretty close for general transfer and file transfer speeds but Desterm doesn't like the RamLink much. Other features of Novaterm that I've found useful: UUen/decoding and ASCII translation of files in the buffer; setting upload, download, program, and buffer save directories; ZModem up and download, as well as the standard Punter/Xmodem/Ymodem/Kermit. If you need a bigger buffer, you can set up an REU or RamDrive/RamLink DACC partition for Novaterm. You can also download to the buffer in ZModem streaming mode, which speed= s up transfers somewhat, but your files must be smaller than the buffer. Hopefully I'll be able to transplant the computer to this coming meeting so you can try it out for yourself--the list above was just the things I have found most useful about 9.6. The bottom line: Nick has done an excellent job of adding on to his famous terminal program, and I would recommend this program to anyone using a 64 or 128. It's not shareware anymore, but the $30 was well wort= h it, both as a program and to help continue support for our older systems. If we did get enough people together willing to buy a User group license, it would only be $15 per person to have a licensed copy. (Perhaps the club could put up the $30 for the initial setup?) --Mike #! rnews 1407 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!nntp.coast.net!oleane!jussieu.fr!univ-lyon1.fr!h= owland.erols.net!newsxfer2.itd.umich.edu!portc01.blue.aol.com!news-res.gs= l.net!news.gsl.net!news.mathworks.com!enews.sgi.com!news.uoregon.edu!news= .algonet.se!news.hebel.net!news.sics.se!news.telia.se!news.cs.tut.fi!isos= otka.cs.tut.fi!albert From: albert@isosotka.cs.tut.fi (Ojala Pasi 'Albert') Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: Re: Can Amiga write 2 1581 disks? From what I gathered from "Inside Commodore DOS", the ID in a sector header is being compared to a location in the 1541 RAM. That location, I assume, is being updated whenever an INITIALIZE command is issued, and probably also when the drive assumes that a disk change has occurred. But where does it get this disk ID from? It seems unlikely that it takes the ID from the sector 18:0 data; I remember having hacked the 18:0 ID habitually to get "nicer" directory listings, and I've never got a 29 error.
