I used it with my Amiga for a long while, and as a spare monitor for the 64 at times. However, a few months back, I went to turn on the monitor, and I got a blackish-blank screen, followed very quickly by a burning smell. Now, I am fairly good with electronics by both training and hobby. Therefore, I recognized this right away as a _bad sign_ and quickly shut off the monitor. However, I have NO experience with TV/monitor repair. Before I take this thing to a monitor repair center, does anyone have an idea what might have happened to the poor thing? Well... you could of course use some hot new FPGA or something like that to do the work of the DMA chip. A friend of mine looked into it a while ago and it's by no means impossible, it's just a bit impractical as the c= ost of the type of chip needed used to be just a bit under $100 here in Swede= n if I'm not mistaken. With the cost of the 16 Megs of memory we would have _had to_ have added we thought the price was a little steep :) We had a kind of budget version on our minds for a while though, but it involved three (I think) EPLD's (which we have loads of) but it was just a bit too complex and we just never got past the planning stage. If, however, anyone's interested in a project that's a bit easier, I have some nice plans (schematics, PCB layouts) of a Swiftlink clone that I mad= e some six months ago and have been using ever since. There's one thing tha= t separates it from the real Swiftlink however. It has a switch to select t= he oscillator frequency thus enabling it to use both regular baud rates as w= ell as the 115200 baud rate (very useful with ACE). It's mostly surface mount= ed and therefore pretty small. (I had to make it larger in order for it to f= it nicely in the cartridge I had :) Oh, and before anyone gets exited about copyright issues and such things,= let me say that I've never really seen a Swiftlink cart, nor any schematics o= f one. And, if you're in the U.S. , you're probably better of buying the real th= ing from CMD... But then of course, you wouldn't have the satisfaction of using hardware = you built yourself :) /Pitch #! rnews 2983 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!nntp.coast.net!oleane!jussieu.fr!univ-lyon1.fr!h= owland.erols.net!bloom-beacon.mit.edu!eru.mt.luth.se!news.kth.se!news From: e92_aan@elixir.e.kth.se (Andreas Andersson) Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: Re: 6504 programming Was: Re: Multi-processor fractal program Date: 11 Aug 1996 13:45:39 +0200 Organization: School of EE, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden Lines: 54 Sender: e92_aan@mozart.e.kth.se Message-ID: References: <4uj3e3$ig8@d1o2.telia.com> <320DA0C9.1BE6@ludd.luth.se> NNTP-Posting-Host: mozart.e.kth.se Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=3Diso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit In-reply-to: Joachim Str=F6mbergson's message of Sun, 11 Aug 1996 10:58:4= 9 +0200 X-Newsreader: Gnus v5.1 In article Joachim Str=F6mbergson wrote: From: Joachim Str=F6mbergson Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Date: Sun, 11 Aug 1996 10:58:49 +0200 Organization: FairLight Path: news.kth.se!eru.mt.luth.se!newsfeed.luth.se!news.luth.se!news Lines: 26 References: <4uj3e3$ig8@d1o2.telia.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: my21.sm.luth.se Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=3Diso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Mailer: Mozilla 2.02 (Win95; I) > Hi! > > Peter Karlsson wrote: > >=20 > > I once read, in 64'er a few years ago, about a "multi-processor" > > fractal drawing program for the C64, that used the floppy's processor > > to speed up the calculations ("true" multitasking). > > I used to have it somewhere, but dunno where it is now... Fun as this might be, I don't think you'll get the printer to load your c= ode the way the drive does... I might be wrong of course, and in that case you should be able to come u= p with a commprotocol much like the regular one on the serial bus, with the 64 as a bus master and the drive(s) and the printer as slaves. It would of course have to be quite a bit faster, but you can fix that by checking out a few decent fastloaders. They don't elaborate on the differences, but apparently the newer (and much more expensive) BJC-4100 works well with Epson 24-pin color codes. The speed and capacity are nice though. If you > are an icon junky like myself, then you'll appreciate any ability to=20 > use your CMD HD and RamLink from the regular GEOS deskTop no matter > what other limitations come with it... I agree, although I prefer DualTop. However, I would like to know what would be involveld in getting my copy = of GEOS to work with my RamLink? My setup is a 128-D, HD-40 with three GEOS 1581 partitions, and an FD2000= , and of course a RamLink, with 2MB. I also have an REU plugged into the RamLink, which I keep set on Direct m= ode, so that other programs can use it (I did the direct mode hack that appeared = in C=3D World). HD is Device 8, FD is device 10, RamLink is device 16. My internal 71 is usually disabled (using the Cut-the-ATN-Line-and-put-in-a-10K-resistor ha= ck), but when it's switched on, it's also device 8. So the question here is, Let's say I configure my RamLink for two 1581 partitions, one of them would be GEOS 64 and the other would be GEOS 128,= the work partitions would remain on my harddrive. How then would I get the system to work with all these drives?? I mean, I have five GEOS-accessable devices here.. an REU, a RamLink, a harddrive, an FD2000, and a 1571-D... Beyond anything, I want the thing to be able to access the HD, the RamLin= k, and the FD2000, with the option to swap in my REU and/or my 1571 if needed. = FWIW the REU is used here as temporary storage, I don't care if it's contents = gets destroyed by other programs--it wasn't meant to be battery backed. The r= amLink memory right now, has nothing in it, not even a copy of EZloader. Can someone give me any ideas, or point me to a decent alternate desktop = that will allow better drive access? I am willing to change device numbers around if needed, as long as my HD = can remain as device 8 (I use it for everything).
