Got a good deal on it -= - $127 new, although the box had been opened. I thought some others might b= e interested in my experiences in making it work with my Commodore and Geos. The manual for the printer is aimed at Windoze users, of course. As such,= it provides very little technical information of the type needed to make it = work with our systems. Canon customer service is of little help, also -- they = don't even have access to the escape codes for this printer! If the manual says so, I missed it, but the BJC210 ships in what they cal= l BJ mode, with is actually an IBM 24 pin emulation. Curiously, this mode resp= onds to the Perfect Print IBM 24 pin driver -- as long as you choose 24 pin mo= de from Perfect Print's dialog box -- OR to the NEC 9 pin driver if you want= to use it that way. It will NOT print correctly using the IBM 24 pin driver = and the 9 pin option. Print quality is pretty good both ways. The BJC210 is also able to emulate the Epson 5100 printer, but it must be= told to do so, and as I said, the escape codes are hard to come by. I took min= e to a friend's house, hooked it up to his PC, installed the software on the P= C, and switched using that. Changes such as this are kept in non-volatile me= mory in the printer, so it doesn't forget the settings on the way home. ;-)=20 I also set the printer to do its own smoothing when printing in black, bu= t I can't see that this makes much difference. In the Epson mode, the BJC210 works well with the Epson 24 Q PerfectPrint driver. Quality seems to be a bit better than when in the IBM mode. I jus= t switched it last night, so haven't had much time to experiment with it ye= t. Unfortunately, it still does NOT print color using any of the Epson color drivers that I have. I haven't given up on this yet, but I'm going to hav= e to get hold of the escape codes. Does anyone have them, or know where I migh= t find them (other than Canon's automated fax service, which is slick if yo= u have a fax . . . :-( This is nice printer -- inexpensive (more on that once I know how much I = get from an ink cartridge), good print quality, and compatible enough to work satisfactorily with a Commodore system. P.S. -- As an interesting (maybe) sidelight, I thought I might speed up m= y printing time by adding a printer buffer. Had an old one lying around tha= t I picked up at a flea market, so figured now was the time to get it going. = With the buffer (256K) in line, printing was actually _slower_ than without it= ! The buffer is unable to receive, buffer, and transmit data as fast as it = is transmitted from my 128, REU, and PerfectPrint Fast GeoCable driver. Now = I admit that this buffer is an old one, and I'm sure that there are newer o= nes that are much faster, but nevertheless I was surprised and pleased to kno= w that my old 128 can send data _fast_! =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D | irv_cobb@radiks.net http://www.radiks.net/irv_= cobb | | "Listen, for I will speak Files for Commodore = Geos | | of excellent things..." Question for Fred: Does it go black in 40 column mode as well, or just in 80 column? Moreover, when it goes black, is it audible, e.g. a snapping sound perhaps? >You appear to have the world famous cold solder joints on the flyback=20 >transformer.... you will just keep whacking that monitor until it lands= =20 >in the dumpster like mine... Arggh, don't do that! Cold solder joints are pretty easy to fix. They generally make a snapping sound from current arcing across the crack; I found the one in my monitor by waiting until night, and then (carefully!) wiggling the PCB in the monitor with the lights off, and looking for the little flash of light from the arc. To fix them of course you just need to touch them with a soldering iron to re-flow the solder. If you have a wimpy cheapy low-power pencil iron like I do, the joint will probably break again some years down the road (like mine did :). I think it goes without saying that anyone mucking around in their monito= r should keep it unplugged (MTV style) when possible, to keep fingers and screwdrivers far away from capacitors and the transformer, etc. -- I love my Commodore but I don't think it is worth dying for. Just for reference Fred, my 1084 has recently started cutting out in 80-c= olumn mode, but leaves 40-column mode fine! A light tap on the left side of the monitor fixes it up. I think it is a weak connection near the RGB input in my case. If you are going black in both 40 and 80 modes, then Bob is right: you probably have to fix up some cold solder joints. evetS- #! rnews 1492 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!spool.mu.edu!howland.erols.net!vixen.cso.uiuc.ed= u!newsfeed.internetmci.com!in3.uu.net!EU.net!Norway.EU.net!oslonett.no!sn= .no!newsfeed.tip.net!academy.bastad.se!news From: anderse@academy.bastad.se (Anders Erlandsson) Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: Re: CD 32 Video Cartridge Date: 10 Aug 1996 15:29:54 GMT Organization: Connection Bastad Lines: 30 Message-ID: <819.6795T852T1401@academy.bastad.se> References: <19960806.105750.51@clares.demon.co.uk> <320B49A3.6AE0@hp.com= > NNTP-Posting-Host: academy.bastad.se Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=3Diso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Newsreader: THOR 2.22 (Amiga;TCP/IP) Reinhard Schaffner wrote: >Hello, >I've bought an Amiga CD 32 yesterday and now I'm looking for the=20 >advertised video cartridge which was supposed to come out in autumn >1993. I actually threw away one 1804S monitor, after the problem got worse and worse over months, and finally you never got a picture. It seems to be slightly heat related, worse in summer than winter and helped if you can keep the room cool. When still another Commodore 40/80 monitor began to show the problem I took it to our local TV/computer monitor/printer repair place. They knew nothing about C=3D monitors, but were willing to take my advice and just go in and solder everything that looked as if it needed soldering.
