It would only be a problem if your house was a mess=20 (dust I mean). :) And I do not mean for someone to put a fan blowing=20 driectly into the drive. Put it a foot or so back from the drive (a 6=20 inch fan works well) and have it blowing across the drive, not into it. =20 This takes the heat away with a miniaml ammount of dust enters the=20 drive. Also have the drive up on blocks (1 inch works well). This will=20 allow excellent air flow. I know for a fact this works. I had drives=20 that died on me very quickly untill I added a fan. My main 1541 is 11=20 years old and still working perfectly. :) =20 : To the original poster, your not asking a very consise question. He;s in Germany Bill, he has a Euro/UK plastic case 128D - they have daughterboards for the 71 side, and the motherboard is a standard low profile C128. (I have one, I converted to 110) What he needs to know is the pinout of the internal post connector for the C128 and how to adapt the dip header connector to a standard serial plug. The easiest way to go about it, would be to cut an old serial cord in half. Separate the lines out and note the pinout with a multimeter. Serial port pinout: 1 srqin 5 1 2 gnd 6 3 atn 4 2 4 clk 3 5 data 6 reset C128/Euro D internal Serial Bus Post connector: Starting with the motherboard facing you, the #1 pin is the farthest to the left the connector follows the same pinout as the external connector. The 7th pin is the drive reset line. I don't know where you would find a connector to hook into the 71 side harness cable connector though. I would NOT want to cut into that harness 7 wire connector - those are very rare, and a non-standard spacing. I would look for a long dip header with that spacing in a electronics store and then just solder the wires from the cut serial cable to the dip header and plug the dip header into the 71d harness cable. Finally, if you do get it all hooked up - remember to unplug the power connector to the c128 - you never know what additional damage you could do to an already broken 128... Wish I could be of more help, but I'd suggest finding a good tech to have a look at it - building cables is always that easy. It's a controller board that plugs into the second-last ROM slot and has a WD1793 floppy controller on it, and came with an 8" drive. Alas no manuals. I haven't been able to get it running yet, because one of the clip leads that are used to pick up signals from places on the motherboard clipped onto a chip that doesn't exist in my rev of the 8032 board. It is obvious that the clip (orange) picks up a clock, so I'll have to borrow a 'scope to find the same frequency clock on my board as where the lead went on the broken one. There are a bunch of CP/M format disks, and a custom version of CP/M for the Z-RAM board (Z80+64K) that knows about the 8" drive. However I'm guessing that the drive also has a use in native Commodore mode, and that's where I need some pointers. How do you access it? If I ever get the board working, and figure out how to access the drive, what will I find on the PETDisk II diskettes (two 8") that I have? --=20 Markus Wandel Ottawa Ont.
