I think Autoduel just uses disk protection. It has errors on track 6 on each side, and a file (CA, I think) that points to a sector on that track. When you start the game, it tries to load that file over top of one of it's executables, and then executes that piece of code. If that track is readable, it'll be executing nonsense. I don't think Neuromancer has any disk protection, but when you go to the PAX, it will ask you for info from a code wheel. You might be able to play without using the PAX, but there's information there that you'd need to get very far. Aaron --=20 -------------------------------------------------------- Aaron J. Comp.binaries.cbm has a moderator. Rather, it has a team of moderators. I am the coordinator, and haven't had time to D/L the submissions to a Commodore to test them. The other moderators (who were to be D/L'ing and testing the submissions also) have not been doing so, which means nothing gets posted. However this weekend I intend to deal with the backlog, so look for several approved postings. If anyone wants to join the moderation team, send me e-mail. You'll get first crack at all postings, but you will be expected to try out at least some of them and let me know whether or not it is OK to approve. The reason comp.binaries.cbm is moderated is to avoid posting things that are illegal to post (such as cracked games or other copyrighted material where the copyright notice does not allow this sort of thing), and to avoid anything that might be a trojan horse or virus or other malicious software. The down-side is that there is a delay, and some amount of work by the moderators, needed before things can be posted. However I do apologize for the lack of postings. I intend to improve the situation directly. --Bill Ward -- William R Ward Bay View Consulting http://www.bayview.com/~her= mit/ hermit@bayview.com 1803 Mission St. #339 voicemail +1 408/479-= 4072 hermit@cats.ucsc.edu Santa Cruz CA 95060 USA pager +1 408/458-= 8862 #! rnews 1186 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!news1.best.com!newshub.sdsu.edu!newsfeeder.sdsu.= edu!newspump.sol.net!homer.alpha.net!usenet From: Don Parker Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: Re: About that 1571 DD for sale... It's on at least the very first two publicly released ROM versions of=20 the C64 (Kernal ROM version 170 or 0; PEEKing location 65408 will=20 report your ROM version). There is an easy to find out if your 64 has=20 it. BTW, newer 64s, 64Cs, and the 64 mode of 128s don't have this bug.=20 To find out if your machine has the bug, cursor down to the very last=20 line of the screen. Now type anything (It does not matter what) for two=20 full screen lines (one logical line). Now type one more character so=20 that screen scrolls. If you then press your DEL key, the bug, if your=20 machine has it will occur. If you have a program running in memory, it=20 will run. If not, you get a message (I don't remember what as I haven't=20 encountered the bug in ages as I've learned how to avoid). If you press=20 the STOP key to stop any program, it will not work. Believe it or not,=20 not even the RUN/STOP-RESTORE key combination works, forcing you to turn=20 off the power and lose everything in memory (AARGH! as this was before=20 REUs with non-volatile memory and the like were made so everything was=20 indeed lost). There are a few ways to defeat this bug. If you stick to=20 certain cursor colors such as black, this bug will not occur. If you=20 have a disk drive (probably you do, but back in those days, tape drives,=20 yes, that's right, tape drives were more popular and disk drives had=20 just become available), I think you initiliaze the drive in program mode=20 would get around the bug completely. Also, a third method was by=20 pressing certain key combinations would tell you to press play on tape=20 and if you had a tape drive, you could do as the message instructed and=20 anything you had in memory would be intact and everything would return=20 to normal. After becoming victim to this bug many times myself, I=20 finally bought an issue of COMPUTE!"s Gazette (it was a relatively new=20 mag at the time) explaining the bug, what it does and how to avoid and=20 even defeat it. BTW, our first 64 was purchased in 1983 (the 64 itself came out in=20 1982). Is there a way to do that? Or must I put them on tape? >=20 > Alan > BigAJO@aol.com They can be put onto either disk or tape. =20 I personally do this by extracting the raw files from the .t64 image. =20 These raw files I now have sitting on the 'virtual' disk of the A64=20 emulator. These raw files could be transfered to a real 1541 without=20 modification - but I don't have the hardware to connect this to my=20 Amiga. :-( (Oh, you could use a terminal-program too.) =20 If you're using a PC. I'm not sure of what you could use to extract raw=20 files from the .t64 image... (I know there is software about for this.)=20 For the Amiga there's "und64" on Aminet under the path: misc/emu/ =20 If you -really- want to do this now... you can get the raw file from=20 the .t64 file by loading it into a HEX editor, and cropping the .t64=20 header from it. (This is what I did for many of my files... worked=20 great too.) =20 It's done like this: =20 In most .t64 files there'll be an area at the beginning with: =20 "C64S Tape File..." or "C64 tape image file..." (blah blah) =20 Followed by a block of $00's, which end at about $0400 in the file. =20 For these ones with the block of $00's in the header you can=20 usually just crop the file so that $03fe is the -first- byte of the=20 file. And if they aren't already so, change the first-two bytes=20 so they're $01 and $08, (often they're both $00) =20 If you know what the "SYS" command looks like, you can always spot=20 the beginning of a .t64 file... the "SYS" command is $9e, often=20 followed by a space, $20, and then the number. (eg: 2066) =20 The beginning of the file, (where the $01, $08 should be), is ALWAYS=20 6 bytes before this. (eg: For "frogger.t64" the "SYS" command is=20 at $0404, so the beginning of the file is at $03fe - this is the=20 most-common position. For "Super Pipeline 2", in "superpp2.t64",=20 the "SYS" was at $0064 (Note: in this case it was -not- followed by=20 a space ($20)), so the beginning of the file was at $005e, (don't=20 forget to change the first-two characters to $01, $08.) =20 Well, this worked for me... if you can't be bothered waiting for a=20 program to do it, use the above-method, or make a program to use=20 this method. (It worked fine for all the .t64 files I've found at=20 the "arnold" web-site.) =20 These raw files should transfer straight to a 1541 happily. (enjoy)=20 Hope this helps. =20 Any questions, or flames for an overly-technical post are welcome. =20 :-) =20 Nathan. =20 -- .---------------------------------. \\\\\/// | Happiness is not a destination. | / ^ _ \ ----| It is a method of life. | =20 ( (o) (o) ) | - Burton Hills | *=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3DoOOO=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D(_)=3D=3D=3D=3D=3DOOOo=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D*-----------------------' | Nathan Wain | =20 | n.wain@student.canterbury.ac.nz | | So there! | *=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3DOooo.=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D* .oooO ( | ( ) ) / \ ( (_/ \_) #! rnews 2067 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!news1.best.com!news.texas.net!news.kei.com!newsf= eed.internetmci.com!newsxfer2.itd.umich.edu!portc01.blue.aol.com!newstf01= .news.aol.com!news-e2a.gnn.com!pop.gnn.com!Eyeth From: Eyeth@gnn.com (Todd Elliott) Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: Re: Commodore Hacking Followup (was: Re: bincancel:55 large bina= ries:AR505:@@NCM) Date: Thu, 25 Jul 1996 20:46:19 Organization: GNN Lines: 30 Message-ID: <4t94g5$8gl@news-e2d.gnn.com> References: <4t8eh9$o7l@pravda.aa.msen.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: 34-97.client.gnn.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=3D"us-ascii" X-GNN-NewsServer-Posting-Date: 26 Jul 1996 00:45:57 GMT X-Mailer: GNNmessenger 1.3 Jim Brain wrote: >Commodore Hacking has traditionally been posted to the newsgroup as well >as made available via email to present to the largest possible audience >of Commodore owners.
