[snip] Well, as first to reply, I would say to run the RAM test about three more times and if you get the exact same list of defective addresses, I would go right for U22, that is the 4164 RAM chip that is tied to D2 (bit three of eight). It sounds like a few bits are sticking high. There are several other possable chips to check but most of those would effect the whole byte (not just the third bit...) or they would give random errors, not the same location every time... Let me know if that dosen't fix it- I would really be suprised to find it was somthing else... BTW, if you want to make sure you have the 4146 that is D2, maybe your c64 has the chips in a different possition.?. You can test for continuity between pins 2 or 14 of the 4164 and pin 35 of the 6510. If these pins are connected, that is the correct RAM chip... Don't use those ancient things... The responsivenes sucks and they are large and bulky. Go find a real nice PC stick- the ONLY joy stick I use (the only one there is, or at least after you use it you'll think so...) is a GRAVIS PC gamepad- you can use it right or left handed and it has a detachable "stick" so it can be used as a "game pad" or a jotstick (nothing like that stupid cover than fit over nintendo game pads- much better...) The interface will cost you less than $10.00 at Ratshack and I will mail you the dox/schematic for free... All this talk about using atari 2600 sticks is making me sick- mostly cause I once thought they were wonderful- they really do suck... If you are cool like me (ie. like to solder alot...) you can build two 8-by-8 selector switches that allow you to define the other keys on the joy-pad to be any one of the 64 keys on the keyboard- useful for the flight sims. Anyway, once you do this be fore warned, there is no settling for the atari sticks when you are at a friends house... I sent a listing to a printer using: OPEN4,4:CMD4:LIST And it listed half way then ran into problems- it started taking the rest of the ascii data as control codes and eventually errored out with a long beep. The printer in question is a Star SG-10C. So my question is, why did it go into control mode? Does it have "quote mode" like the comodore OS has where it prints the petascii equivelent in "quote mode" and the CHR$ value when not in quote mode... I have never come across this problem till now so I haven't studied it much... If you have a fit, short of listing it till it errors out, then listing it again below the error- please let me know... However, my decision not to buy more programs or dongles is based on my own belief that no one should have to buy more than one copy of any program. Let's get real. If I wanted to pirate a copy of a program, I most definitely could...but never do. I have two residences. One in Barstow, CA and one in Phoenix, AZ. When I make trips back and forth, I have to take the dongle with me. I forgot to last time and spent a week unable to do what I desired to do...simply because of that stupid dongle. I agree, a dongle is better than disk copy protection. I prefer it. In fact, I never considered having more than one copy until my current situation came up. I agree that most people will not fall in this category at all. Although there are many commercial programs being illegally distributed, I'm not one that does it. Look at all the emulator programs. Do not classify me with those people. #! rnews 790 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!news1.best.com!news.texas.net!news.kei.com!newsfeed. internetmci.com!swrinde!ihnp4.ucsd.edu!munnari.OZ.AU!news.ecn.uoknor.edu!news. ysu .edu!yfn.ysu.edu!aa363 From: aa363@yfn.ysu.edu (Jacob Huebert) Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: FS: C64, Fast Load, etc Date: 14 Jul 1996 21:22:18 GMT Organization: St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown, OH Lines: 16 Message-ID: <4sboea$jlf@news.ysu.edu> Reply-To: aa363@yfn.ysu.edu (Jacob Huebert) NNTP-Posting-Host: yfn.ysu.edu I still have the following for sale. I especially want to thank Mike Neus who also sent e-mail. (I don't get all the messages posted to comp.sys.cbm.) I found the following response confusing, although it was the only one I saw that addressed this question. --------------------- Text Import Start --------------------- Date : 07-07-96 Time : 22:58 From: Radioactive Warrior > What are the archival characteristics of the media? How long will > they last before "bit rot" sets in? How does this compare with > say, 3.5" DD diskettes and typical Hard drives. (Localy we have had > too many HD crashes on CBM BBSs.) The ZIP drive was developed by the IOMEGA company- the same who made famous Bernolli drive. I assume they drew from that research when making the ZIP drive because the media is thin (like a floppy disk). Contrast the SyQuest, these cartridges are more like hard drive platters platters but the hard drive midia is contained within a "sturdy"- ahem... cartruidge that allows it to be poped out... While this is a novel aproach, it has many disadvantages, the most noticable of which is how fragle the mechanism is... Also, Zip drives and loud and get quite hot (cause of the power required to spin the huge platter...) all this is contrast the ZIP drive, anyway... --------------------- Text Import End --------------------- I'll say again that my main interest is in archival backup of files to/from a CMD HD. Ideally this would probably be an external SCSI tape backup unit. Unfortunatly I am not aware of any sofware to use these with a CMD HD. The largest partition supported by the CMD HD is 16M so any removable media larger than 16M would be sufficient. A 1 gig (or so) JAZZ drive would be overkill and much more expensive than the ZIP. My CMD HD is only 40M. The most cost effective way to expand the drive is to install a larger SCSI HD mechanism. The ZIP or EZ135 solition is an interesting solution for both backup and expansion (which I don't need) at a reasonable cost. Currently the EZ135 now at $120 (down from $130 last week) seems to be the best drive, although the ZIP now reportedly at $150 is also a good drive. I am most concerned about the long term avalability of the drives and media. It was suggested that I wait for a new LS-120 (120 Meg 3.5" floppy!) drive. However, these may be more expensive than the others and I question whether they would be available in the older slow SCSI-2 type that works best with the CMD HD. [It was suggested that CMD might produce a LS-120 drive. I think this is unlikely. Besides CMD is working hard on the Super64/128 CPUs and has put other projects on the back burner. I had heard a rumor that they were developing a lower cost 3.5" HD floppy drive.] At least two people said that the ZIP drive is much more popular than the EZ135 and that the EZ135 might soon be discontinued. If I had to buy today, I think I would chose the ZIP drive. However, as the game is minimizing risks of HD crash and choice of back up media rather than a NEED, I am going to wait and see what happens. Finally, someone asked me about using the CD-ROM drive. I'm not aware of any C64 software. I'm using a 128 with a CMD HD and the German software that can be found on ccnga.uwaterloo.ca .../util128 (cdrom1.d64 ?) And before you ask, I don't have any of those C64/128 CDROMS that have been mentioned in comp.sys.cbm over the past year or so. Again, thanks to all who provided usefull or interesting info about the ZIP and EZ135 drives. alan.jones@qcs.org ___ QWKRR128 V4.32 [R] #! rnews 2251 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!news1.best.com!news.texas.net!news.kei.com!newsfeed. internetmci.com!in1.uu.net!news00.sunet.se!sunic!news99.sunet.se!news.chalmers. se !news.gu.se!news From: MagerValp@Goth.Org Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: Re: Programming the Cassette Port Date: 14 Jul 1996 20:57:06 +0200 Organization: Educational Programme for Computational Linguistics, Univ. of Gothenburg Lines: 32 Sender: cl3polof@munin.cling.gu.se Message-ID: References: <31E713C3.7CB3@ix.netcom.com> <4s9phe$fnf@sparc.isl.net> NNTP-Posting-Host: munin.cling.gu.se Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit In-reply-to: mmiller3@sparc.isl.net's message of 13 Jul 1996 22:28:46 -0500 X-Newsreader: Gnus v5.0.2 >>>>> "Mike" == mmiller3 writes: >>>>> "Jack" == Jack Followay, Jr. writes: Jack> Has anyone played with using the cassette port as an i/o point Jack> OTHER than the obvious use of the door stop/datassette player?
