Hmmm. Who is then responsible for 0.12? AJ> Almost certainly, Morgens Kjaer. I have that version complete on two disks (one is a backup copy of the other, since it is copy protected (I managed to hack the copy protection, though, so I could make my own work-disk)) and a (Swedish) manual. Bought it a couple of years ago. AJ> Is this for the C64, or perhaps the PET with the combi board? I presume that 0.12 is just an early version of 0.14. There were several enhancements to the disk loaded version. I was not aware that it was ever copy protected. I'm ammazed that it was still available for purchase just a "couple years ago". In the US it is essentialy freeware. I also have some versions of the 0.14. Too bad it's just so darn slow, and that there is so little memory left, otherwise it would be a very good alternative, especially with its ability of doing graphics programming directly in the language. AJ> The last disk loaded C64 version that I know of is called Power Driver. I understand that all versions were faster than Basic, and COMAL 2.0 is faster than compiled Basic and most other languages. Power Driver with JiffyDOS and a 1581 drive should be awsome. (The later disk loaded versions came with 1541 fastloaders.) Power Driver gives 15K free for program space. However, Comal accounts its free memory differently than Basic. Comal reserves space for the high-res screen. Comal has lots of built in commands, including sound and graphics, that would have to be loaded as Extensions to Basic, eating up more memory. Comal's high-res screen area can be used as almost 8K of additional buffer. The Power Driver "compiler" (shareware in 1989, CT #25) gives about 25K free, i.e. you can use about 10K more data space for arrays. Comal programs generaly take less space than equivalent Basic programs. The disk loaded Comal is not as good as the cartridge based 2.0 but it is quite good and you don't have to worry about students stealing an expensive cartridge. Anyone know where to find COMAL programs? AJ> I'm going to slam this one back into your court. It is my understanding that Comal was more popular in Europe than it ever was in the US or anywhere else. I'm not aware of any Internet FTP or WWW site with many COMAL programs. I figure you could set up a nice ring network with a special box at the server (which would give you the ability to plug in a mouse), and a large collection of joystick port extenders. At least, it looked real neat when the 5 little LEDs I had hooked up to Joyport 1 would go on and off at my command. I'll see if I can find the program I'd written and post it up here, with notes. Either route would work for me. The above sounds like what I'm looking for. Or does it just hook straight into one of the C64 ports on the back? >(they do have speakers in them too right??) Chris, 1702s were meant for 64s and have one speaker in them for the 64's audio. If you have an original monitor cable (the one with three RCA plugs on the end and a DIN connector on the other) you can hook your 64 to the monitor as soon as you get it home. I have also seen a cable with 4 RCA plugs, the fourth one being a composite output which works on some 64s. If you do not have a monitor cable, you will need one. Don't go looking for anything special, original equipment is not necessary unless you can find it easy or if it comes with the monitor you will buy. If you can't get an original cable, get a 5-pin DIN to 4 RCA jack adapter from Radio Shack or some other source, and also get a couple of RCA patch cords. You can use the cords with the adapter to get audio out, and composite out, and hook it in to the front of a 1702... no worries. The above assumes you have a C64 with a composite out pin in its video out port... if you do not, you should be able to use the same setup, but with one more patch cord, and connect the plugs to the rear of a 1702. #! rnews 1143 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!news1.best.com!nntp.primenet.com!news.mathworks.com! news-res.gsl.net!news.gsl.net!ix.netcom.com!news From: jmcgee@mail.orion.org (Jack McGee) Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: Re: How do I convert C64 Files to IBM PC format?
