You could have posted your own name four times in rapid succession since my rules forgot to specify otherwise. You all were either too polite or didn't notice. This was fun.. but I didn't much like my selection method since this .ipa account didn't log the same as the .edu account leaving me to believe that it is pretty undependable. I got the most complete results on another (.edu ) account so who knows if somebody got left out. I've noticed before that the postings seem to get scattered around and don't always make it to all servers. What a shame. (Pues, asi es la vida) Anyway, I'm contacting rlv@terra by email and as soon as I get the address, and the game will be in the mail. I've got more of these to give away, maybe 30 or 40. Somebody give me a better idea about how to do this. As I said, my method leaves a lot to be desired. For instance, the post numbers didn't even agree with the dates and times. And if I'd gotten any replies from Europe, I don't know how I'd have figured it. At least all the current replies are in CDT. How does this compare with say, 3.5" DD > diskets and typical Hard drives. (Localy we have had too many HD > crashes on CBM BBSs.) The ZIP drive was developed by the IOMEGA company- the same who made the famous Bernolli drive. I assume they drew from that research when making the ZIP drive because the media is thin (like a floppy disk). Contrast the SyQuest, these cartridges are more like hard drive platters but the hard drive midia is contained within a "sturdy"- ahem... cartruidge that allows it to be poped out... While this is a novel aproach, it has many disadvantages, the most noticable of which is how fragle the mechanism is... Also, Zip drives and loud and get quite hot (cause of the power required to spin the huge platter...) all this is contrast the ZIP drive, anyway... > How long will the drives and particulary the media be available? Is this an indication that Syquest is taking the market away > from Zip or that Syquest is doing poorly and just dumping stock? Well, SyQuest and Iomega have been compeditors long before the ZIP drive came out... In fact, SyQuest was doing quite well marketing 5.25" removable media cartridges that held 40megs, the next model held 80... These drives were peices of crap (in my opininion...) but for firms that needed to be able to lug around huge files they were a god send... The Iomega corp. had all but given up on the removable media trend (with only a tape drive and the Bernolli technology keeping their name in catalogs) untill 1995 when out of nowhere they released the ZIP drive... It was all SyQuest could do to keep up... The 130meg drive was released (in my opinion, premature- so not all of the bugs are worked out). As a result, Imoega has shot to the top of the removable media market with more money than they know what to do with. If you want more- Check out the Iomega JAZZ drive, 1G of removable media for under $100.00 per cartridge... -nice... I think Imoega will be around a while.. . And before you ask- the JAZZ drive is NOT compatable with the ZIP drive... I have an Epson emulation cartridge that HP made a few years back. It seems to work fine with a Super Graphics Gold interface. But somehow an HP running an Epson emulation, with a interface card that is running a Commodore emulation, seems rather inefficient. It works fine, though, and is certainly a tribute to the ruggness of the emulations in place within these two devices. #! rnews 1230 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!news1.best.com!nntp.primenet.com!news.mathworks.com! newsfeed.internetmci.com!in2.uu.net!prodigy.com!usenet From: RVTP18B@prodigy.com (David Tuomi) Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: Re: Zip Drives Date: 8 Jul 1996 00:21:48 GMT Organization: Prodigy Services Company 1-800-PRODIGY Lines: 10 Distribution: world Message-ID: <4rpkas$1o0m@useneta1.news.prodigy.com> References: <31df2ef4.7d0e@netcom.ca> NNTP-Posting-Host: 192.168.253.45 X-Newsreader: Version 1.2 I've used a ZIP on my 128, but only by hooking it up to my 128 through a CMD SCSI hard drive. The ZIP drives are a tad inconvenient in that they only support device 5 & 6 (or is it 4 & 5). Anyway for it to boot, it would need to be device 0. I bet there would be more success with an EZ drive from Syquest. I have heard of people using older Syquest and Bernoulies with the CMD host adapter, and booting off of them. But, its my understanding that when you pop the media and put in a new one you have to hit RESET on the host adapter, or else you'll scramble your data. The CMD doesn't have anything built in to support removable media. #! rnews 949 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!news1.best.com!news.texas.net!news.kei.com!newsfeed. internetmci.com!pump.acadian.net!news From: blackblt@bridge.net (MICHAEL RUBIN) Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: FS 1571 Drive + 1902a Case Date: Mon, 08 Jul 1996 02:53:43 GMT Organization: Acadian Net, serving Acadiana and the Cajun country.
