Look for it coming up soon. As for those watching for me. I am not completely online yet.... However, I AM online. For those who want to contact me, brain@mail.msen.= com is still operational, but the preferred email is j.brain@ieee.org. Pleas= e make a note of it. I am taking any extra time I have now and updating the WWW site. So far, the CBM Links Site (http://www.msen.com/~brain/cbmlinks/), has been updated with all the URLs I have received in the past 2 months. I have found a Internet provider in Omaha that will allow me to put my ow= n computer system on the T1 line and have adminstrative rule over the syste= m. As such, the US Commodore WWW Site will be moving to the new machine and will be greatly expanded. In fact, the new site has already been designe= d, but space constraints and lack of CGI access on MSEN forced me to shelve = the idea. The new site will be: The Virtual Internet Commodore User Group. (VICUG) In addition to the content on my present site, an automated Links site, SIGs for all the Commodore brands, including the lesser known 264 series = anmd the 500/600/700 series, and chat and other niceties will be available. I= hope everyone will take advanrtage of the site. The site will look like an electronic user group meeting, and I will want= it to have SIG chairs, a board, and members (free membership, of course). The site will cater to both Lynx and graphics WWW browsers, with support = for basic HTML and HTML 3.0 plus extensions. So that I never have to move the site again, I will be obtaining a domain address (www.jbrain.com or similar). I might get cbm.com, but I fear tha= t's taken. Why? The old site has outgrown its server and space, and I can't make it look nice anymore. It was a prototype site, whe the number of Commodore sites ranged in the handfuls, and the number of WWW sites in general was = in the thousands. It's been operational since late 1994, and it has been very u= seful, but is showing its age. It was designed with HTML 1.0, and no CGI access= nor any niceties. Also, Commodore users understand the User Group organizati= on, but WWW is daunting to them. This will make searching for Commodore info= rmation more intuitive. Anyway, the list of projects to be completed in the next month include: Commodore HAcking #13 (top priority) update the FAQ do a last update on the exsting WWW site. start the new site. I hope you will all enjoy the new site when it becomes operational. Continue in Commodore, Jim Brain -- Jim Brain, Embedded System Designer, Brain Innovations, Inc. I was writing an e-mail reply with TWS 128 and quit TWS. I entered go64 and loaded Novaterm. It= was real slow on my 128D. Getting tired of waiting I shut it off and turned it on while holding the C= key. Novaterm was up and running in no time (well 41 seconds to be exact). I signed on and did what I wanted= to and signed off with this question in my mind. Why was it so slow when= I switched from 128 mode to 64 mode? The screen still showed JiffyDOS was active. What happened to my drive? I had done the go64 swap before without any loss in loading speed. I fired up the 128 in 80 column mode, did go64 and loaded Novaterm. 41 seconds. I quit. Fired up the 128 in 80 column mode. Loaded TWS 128, Quit, go64, load Novaterm. 2 minutes and 31 seconds. A few more tests and I realized that the jiffyDOS manual doesn't tell the= whole story on page 25/26 (yes I looked in the manual!) when it says 'do = not use the GO 64 command'. If you start your 128 in 128 mode and DO NOT ACCESS THE DISK DRIVE you can use GO64 and not suffer and performance loss in your drive. Even pressing the '@' key to read the Drive DOS version prior to using the GO64 command is enough to mess up the loading performance once you are in= 64 mode. Just thought I'd pass this on. -- BRUCE THOMAS email: rbthomas@freenet.edmonton.ab.= ca EDMONTON, Alberta, CANADA I enGEOy my C-64 and LOVE my BB Writer!! I gather that both the Iomega 100M external SCSI Zip drive and the Syquest 135M external SCSI drive will work equally well with a CMD HD. Is there any functional difference such as write protect, etc.? What are the archival characteristics of the media? How long will they last before "bit rot" sets in? How does this compare with say, 3.5" DD diskets and typical Hard drives. (Localy we have had too many HD crashes on CBM BBSs.) How long will the drives and particulary the media be available? Will they be available for 10-20 years or are they just a passing fad? Which of the Zip and Syquest drives will survive the longest in the market? Zip of course was first. I don't expect either to become a major media like 3.5" floppies or ISO 9660 CD-ROMs. I think competition between the two is keeping prices low. Recently I have seen the Syquest 135M dirve for $130 (while the 100M Zip is still about $200). Is this an indication that Syquest is taking the market away from Zip or that Syquest is doing poorly and just dumping stock? Currently, I have a CD-ROM drive attached to my CMD HD. Both have only one DB25 SCSI connector and I think this is also true of the Zip and Syquest drives. How can I attach more than one additional SCSI device to a CMD HD (with different device numbers)? alan.jones@qcs.org ___ QWKRR128 V4.32 [R] #! rnews 1114 Path: pravda.aa.msen.com!news1.best.com!nntp.primenet.com!news.sprintlink= .net!news-stk-3.sprintlink.net!news.sprintlink.net!new-news.sprintlink.ne= t!newsreader.sprintlink.net!news.sprintlink.net!news-stk-200.sprintlink.n= et!news.sprintlink.net!news-stk-11.sprintlink.net!news.mathworks.com!tank= .news.pipex.net!pipex!dish.news.pipex.net!pipex!wave.news.pipex.net!pipex= !soap.news.pipex.net!pipex!usenet From: gsz@dial.pipex.com (George Szaszvari) Newsgroups: comp.sys.cbm Subject: 1526 printer ribbons?
