We saw this last year when someone was saying the C64 would 'never' get a SLIP because it didn't have the capabilities, and turns out he meant graphic capabilities. Is it a common practice of providers who sell PPP or SLIP access to bundle it with a graphical browser as a front end, so that people confuse the two? Because Point to Point Protocol or Seria= l=20 ..... I'm sure that is the reason. For our PC/Mac users, we have a startup package (I'm an ISP) that sets them up with a PPP dialer, a WWW browser, and an SMTP/POP3 mail client. 50% of our users stick with that, and never venture further. About another 30% get into IRC, and get a client for that, and the other 20% learn to telnet, archie, etc., and get quite knowledgeable. Nearly all of the folks in this last group have Unix experience, and also know how to do these things through a shell. One thing I've noticed on all type of machines is that text-based work conducted over a modem generally works better with a direct terminal connection than a SLIP/PPP TCP/IP connection. This is because, for example, if you're telnetting to a host, and typing a letter on that host, each single character you type (or a few, if you're really fast), is encapsulated in a TCP packet, which is encapsulated in an IP packet, which is encapsulated in a SLIP or PPP packet, and then the procedure is reversed at the other end. Since the TCP and IP headers add a minimum of 40 bytes, this is a lot of overhead, and you'll notice a lot of sluggishness typing plain text over a TCP/IP modem connection. On the other hand, a faster connection (ISDN or Ethernet) transfers those packets fast enough that you can't feel any sluggishness. There's certainly no reason why clients like ftp, telnet, archie, mail, etc., would need to be graphical to work over a TCP/IP connection. The ones designed for Windows/Mac are graphical because everything is graphical on those platforms. However, on PC's for example, there is DOS TCP/IP SLIP software that has text-based clients for mail, news, etc.; it's just not commonly used anymore. A nice elm-ncftp-tin-telnet text-based setup would be very nice on the Commodore without graphics. Aaron --=20 -------------------------------------------------------- Aaron J.
